The Art of Pride: As part of the 2007 San Diego LGBT Pride Celebration, a special “Art of Pride” exhibit will be on display at the Pride Fest in Balboa Park. Leading up to the festival, through July 15, the Ricardo Vera Gallery is hosting a preview of the exhibition. Art of Pride showcases 12 talented local artists, whose work ranges from photography to glass. The community is invited to visit the gallery and be among the first to see this incredible compilation. Happy Birthday, Frida! The Center’s Latino/a Services will host “Happy Birthday, Frida: Life! Art! & Tequila!” as a celebration of the life of artist Frida Kahlo. The event, which is for those 21 years and older, will celebrate the 100th anniversary of the birth of Kahlo. The evening will feature the great loves of the artist’s life: music, art and tequila. There will be live salsa and mariachi music, a Frida look-a-like contest, a live DJ and dancing. The event, which runs from 6-10 p.m., is only $8 with advance tickets or $10 at the door. Dyke Date Auction: San Diego Dyke March and Pride Ride will host the Dyke Date Auction fund-raiser at Bourbon Street from 5 to 9 p.m. Dykes, lesbians, queers, allies, activists and bike riders are all invited to join in the fun by bidding to win a date with a local hottie. The event will include a barbecue and Jell-O shots, along with a raffle for great prizes donated by community businesses. All proceeds from the Dyke Date Auction will benefit Dyke March ’07, which will be in Balboa Park during Pride weekend on Sunday, July 22. Out At the Park: Celebrate Pride while enjoying a night of fun, Padres baseball and recognition for the San Diego GLBT community. The Padres will recognize San Diego Pride supporters and volunteers, and the Gay Men’s Chorus of San Diego will sing the National Anthem at the 5:05 p.m. game at Petco Park. Special discounted tickets are available for the “San Diego Pride” section, and can be purchased for $16 online through San Diego LGBT Pride’s Web site. The Summer’s Hottest Pool Party: Join hosts Kevin Tilden, Joel Valenzuela, Philip Diamond and Paul Marra for fun in the sun, an open bar and light hors d’oeuvres at the Summer’s Hottest Pool Party. This event, which is a benefit for the San Diego LGBT Community Center, is sure to attract the hottest people in town, who will come together to support our Center on a fun summer afternoon. The event is from 1-4 p.m. at the Mission Hills home of Kevin Tilden and Philip Diamond. Tickets are just $35 per person. Women’s country-western dance class: The Women’s Resource Center at the San Diego LGBT Community Center offers a free women’s country-western dance class every Monday! Everyone is welcome to attend, and beginners are encouraged. There is no requirement to bring a partner; participants are just asked to “bring your sweet self and a willingness to learn and have fun.” Instructor Danna will be teaching two-step, western waltz, shadow dancing and line dancing. Gentlemen’s Martini Night: Kenn Cross hosts San Diego’s premier weekly gathering for gay professionals and friends, the Gentlemen’s Martini Night. There are no membership fees, cover charges or hidden agendas. The gatherings are just an opportunity to meet new friends and socialize with San Diego’s finest men. The dress code is dressy casual or business attire. S.A.G.E. Monthly Social: Seniors Active in a Gay Environment (S.A.G.E.) is a San Diego-based organization committed to fostering a greater understanding of aging and meeting the unique needs of senior citizens. As part of their regular programming, the group hosts a monthly social. The July event will include a cash bar and dinner at the Top of the Park. The dinner will be buffet style and will begin at 7 p.m. There will be a cash bar starting at 6 p.m. The cost is $15 for members and $20 for guests. Mariza at the Summer Pops: World-renowned singing diva Mariza will join the San Diego Symphony for a very special evening at the Summer Pops. Hailed as “Portugese perfection,” Mariza, with her charismatic presence, will perform a selection of traditional and contemporary songs. The Summer Pops is the San Diego Symphony’s annual outdoor summer series, with regular performances at the beautiful Embarcadero Marina Park.
