Electro-rockers Dirty Sanchez play San Diego Pride
Published Thursday, 12-Jul-2007 in issue 1020
With songs like “Fucking on the Dancefloor,” “Tranny Sex” and “(We Hate) Youth & Beauty,” Dirty Sanchez has made quite a name for itself among gay audiences. The trio – made up of drag comedienne Jackie Beat, DJ Adrian Barbeau and club promoter Mario Diaz – is notorious for its electro-rock sound, flamboyant costumes – and just for having one helluva good time, as is evident from the group’s recent interview with the Gay & Lesbian Times.
All three members of Dirty Sanchez spoke with the GLT (and among themselves) about the origins of the band’s name, the nature of the lyrics and what Pride revelers can expect from the upcoming performance on Saturday, July 21, as part of San Diego Pride’s entertainment lineup.
Gay & Lesbian Times: First, we have to know how you decided on the band name Dirty Sanchez, and why?
Jackie: Our name started out as Leo because me and an original member were both Leos. When that person left the band, we really wanted a new name.
Barbeau: Mario had just joined the band and he suggested “Dirty Sanchez,” and we all thought it was hilarious.
Mario: It does kinda roll off the tongue, doesn’t it?
Jackie: God, you’re gross.
GLT: Is Jackie Beat the same persona in the band as she is when performing her comedy acts? How about the other band members, DJ Adrian Barbeau and Mario Diaz? Do you bring a character to this act, or is Dirty Sanchez really you?
Barbeau: It’s just Barbeau – one name, like Cher. As far as Jackie, I like to think that she has come into her own as a part of Dirty Sanchez; her character always shines through, which adds to the comedic value of the band.
Jackie: Mario and I were pals in New York. I performed at his clubs, and we were in a few Off-Broadway shows together. When I got a job writing for TV and moved out to Los Angeles, Mario followed me out to pursue his acting career. We have very similar senses of humor. He’s my favorite person. The band is just one more way to have fun together.
Mario: Thanks, Jackie. Here’s your $5. Go buy yourself a new wig.
Jackie: Uh, I’m the drag queen in the band, honey – I’m supposed to wear a wig, Elton!
GLT: Dirty Sanchez is performing at this year’s San Diego Pride festival. What can we expect? Any surprises up your skirt?
Jackie: I’m the only one who wears a skirt and, yes, there’s a surprise up there!
Mario: Now who’s the gross one?
Barbeau: Get ready for the sickest and most amazing costumes on the planet and some kick-ass dance music. We may have a few surprises, but they wouldn’t really be surprises if we told you about them.
Jackie: An act actually singing on key at a Pride event might surprise some people.
Mario: Wait a minute, it’s a Pride show? Does that mean there’s going to be gay people there? They better not try and have gay sex with me. Unless, of course, there’s a few bucks involved.
GLT: What do you think of San Diego Pride compared to L.A., San Francisco or New York Pride?
Jackie: We love faggots and carpet-munchers no matter where they live! Seriously, I’ve never done San Diego Pride, so I cannot really compare it to other cities.
Mario: I’m sure by the end of the day, I won’t even remember what city I’m in, so it’s all the same to me.
GLT: Will you be sticking around town to join in the festivities? If so, any clubs or parties where you plan on making a cameo?
Jackie: I only show up if I’m getting paid!

Mario: I think they call that being a whore, sweetie.
Barbeau: I’m always ready to throw down at a good party. I’ll have my records with me, so we’ll see how things go. If you know of a good party, hook it up.
Mario: I’m sure Barbeau and I will be out causing trouble. Wherever there’s good music and a few tattooed-rocker fags, I’m there.
GLT: Now that you’ve released your self-titled debut CD, what are your future plans? Can we expect a new disc anytime soon?
Barbeau: We’re working on new material. We’re also on the hunt for another label at the moment, but until that happens, we’re going to be releasing stuff on our Web site and various digital download sites.
Jackie: Am I still in the band? I quit like every couple of days.
Mario: No, you’re out. We’ve replaced you with Kirstie Alley. Your costumes are a bit big on her, but we’ll have them taken in.
GLT: Many of the lyrics on the disc are, well, dirty. Have you taken any heat from either the gay or straight community over the explicit nature of your music?
Jackie: We’re moving away from that a bit, if for no other reason than the simple fact that we have “been there and done that.”
Barbeau: I can think of worse things to get bent out of shape over than a few dirty words. We’re just having fun.
Jackie: It seems like a lot of bands are going out of their way to be filthy now. People send me songs on MySpace that are so bad – it’s all pussy this and cock that. Filthy without any irony, intelligence or humor is just plain boring.
Mario: Screw irony, humor and intelligence – I just want a BJ.
GLT: What’s your favorite song to perform? And what’s the crowd
favorite?
Barbeau: I love “Youth in Asia.” It’s full of energy, not to mention international flags! We just made a killer music video for that song that can be seen at www.1111entertainment.tv. The crowd favorite is probably either “Fucking on the Dancefloor” or “U Got the Look.”
Jackie: Who cares what the crowd wants? This is about us! My favorite number on stage is “Dinner Party,” but it’s, like, a totally choreographed stage production with four back-up dancer/party guests, so we seldom do it live unless we’re in Los Angeles.
Mario: I like singing “Get it Wet/Walk the Night.” It fulfills my rock
star fantasies.
GLT: Leave us with one thing that no one knows about the band or the individuals that make up Dirty Sanchez.
Barbeau: I wish I could rock like Ace Frehley.
Jackie: We’re straight evangelical Christians.
Mario: On stage, it’s not really us singing. It’s actually the amazing voices of Ashlee Simpson and Clay Aiken. Do not tell anyone or we’re finished!
Dirty Sanchez performs live at 8:45 p.m. on Saturday, July 21, at the Jack FM Stage at the San Diego Pride festival in Balboa Park. For more information, visit www.sdpride.org or www.wearedirtysanchez.com.
