Grease: San Diego Junior Theatre presents a production of Grease. Danny Zuko, the coolest man on campus, unexpectedly reunites with sweet and innocent Sandy, his summer love. With help from the Pink Ladies, Sandy sets out to show Danny that she fits in with the “fast” crowd at Rydell High. The San Diego Junior Theatre productions, which are designed and directed by theater professionals, feature the acting, singing and dancing of the company’s students, all ranging in age from 8-18 years old. Grease plays on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays through Aug. 12, and tickets range from $8-13. The San Diego Junior Theatre is located at 1650 El Prado in Balboa Park. Ascension: Kava Lounge hosts Ascension the first Saturday of every month from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m. DJs Tom King and Robin Roth will spin the best in dark underground dance music. Peruvian Independence Day: Housed in historic 1935 Exposition cottages, 31 groups promote multicultural goodwill and understanding through educational and cultural programs. Every Sunday, open houses are held from noon to 4 p.m. to showcase the national traditions from the many featured lands. The featured house for Aug. 5 will be the House of Peru to celebrate Peruvian Independence Day. There will be a lawn program at 2 p.m. featuring music, dance, traditional costumes, arts, crafts and ethnic foods. The event is free. The House of Peru is located in Balboa Park. Immigration Equality potluck: Immigration Equality San Diego (IESD) will hold a potluck social at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 6. The purpose of the event is for participants to meet people and make new international friends. GLBT immigrants, supporters and same-sex, bi-national couples will be in attendance. There will also be discussion surrounding the latest developments in U.S. immigration law affecting the GLBT community. Everyone is welcome, and attendees may bring a dish to share. Night at the movies: Take in Broken English, starring Parker Posey as Nora Wilder, a 30-something Manhattanite cynical about love and relationships. After a series of disastrous first dates, she meets Julien (Melvil Poupaud), a seemingly devil-may-care Frenchman with a passion for living, and she finds herself in Paris looking to break old patterns. Posey has received critical acclaim for her performance, considered one of her most grown up roles. March of the Penguins: Continue the Hillcrest Centennial Celebration with a movie under the stars atop Whole Foods Market. The award-winning documentary March of the Penguins will begin at 7:45 p.m. on the store’s spacious rooftop parking lot. Attendees are encouraged to bring their family, friends, blankets and folding chairs. The event is free. A number of other centennial events are being planned for the rest of the year, and can be viewed on the Hillcrest Centennial Web site. Gentle Yoga: The Center and Silver Age Yoga Community Outreach (SAYCO) present Gentle Yoga. SAYCO’s mission is to improve the health and overall well-being of senior citizens, regardless of age, physical ability or financial status.
