Audition with Women’s Rep
Women’s Repertory Theatre’s production of A Streetcar Named Desire will be opening March 2004 at the Lyceum Theatre. There will be two variations performed in repertory — a traditional cast alternating with a version in which male roles are played by women as men. LGBT community coalition breakfast, Sept. 19
The third Friday of every month The Center and District 3 City Councilmember Toni Atkins co-host the LGBT Community Coalition Breakfast. The breakfasts are designed to bring San Diego’s GLBT and GLBT-friendly communities together. The mission of The LGBT Community Coalition Breakfast is to bring together fair-minded individuals to network, educate and discuss the diverse issues that concern us as GLBT and allied neighbors and citizens of San Diego. Attending this month’s breakfast and speaking will be a representative from the San Diego Padres. Center City Development Corporation (CCDC) board member Jennifer LeSar will also be talking about CCDC and growth issues in San Diego.
This month’s LGBT Community Coalition Breakfast will be held Friday, Sept. 19 at 7:30 a.m. The cost is $6 per person and includes breakfast. The Center is located at 3909 Centre Street in Hillcrest. To reserve a space, call (619) 692-2077, ext. 212.
Free depression screening, Oct. 9
National Depression Screening Day (NDSD), held each year during Mental Illness Awareness Week, is designed to call attention to the illnesses of depression, bipolar disorder, PTSD and anxiety on a national level, to educate the public about their symptoms and effective treatments, to offer individuals the opportunity to be screened for the disorders, and to connect those in need of treatment to the mental health care system. New San Diego Humane Society and SPCA opens, Sept. 20
Help celebrate the completion of the most important animal welfare project ever undertaken in San Diego as the San Diego Humane Society and SPCA unveils its new home at the San Diego Campus for Animal Care Sept. 20. The “Parade of Animals” from the Sherman St. building to 5500 Gaines St. kicks off at 10:00 a.m. and the doors to the new building open at 11:00 a.m. with tours, educational activities, dog training demos Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream, refreshments and more. Positive Workforce conference Sept. 22-23
A “From Home to Really Back-to-Work” conference will be held Sept. 22-23 from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Doubletree Mission Valley. This is a national conference for those living with HIV/AIDS returning to the workplace. The event will feature over 30 workshops, including resume writing, social security benefits, insurance issues and HIV/AIDS prevention. Mr. & Ms. Latin Leather, Sept. 20
The San Diego Latin Leather Club presents the Mr. & Mrs. Southern California Latin Leather contest at 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 20 at The Hole. Doors open at 5:00 p.m. There will also be a meet and greet Friday, Sept. 19, at the San Diego Eagle at 7:30 p.m. After the contest there will be a victory dance at Bacchus House. Confirmed judges include: Tom Dickinson, Mr. San Diego Leather 2002; Juan Zazueta, International Mr. Deaf Leather 2003; and Sam Bacon, Mr. San Diego 2003. A portion of the proceeds will go to San Diego Latin Pride, T.L.C. (The Leather Community) Scholarship Fund, and Latin Leather Club. For more information, call (619) 280-8773.
Breast cancer support group
The Center offers a support group for lesbian and bisexual women who have had or currently have breast cancer. Women at all stages of treatment are welcome. There is no charge for this support group. It meets the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Center’s Health Services, 2313 El Cajon Blvd. For more information, contact Regina L. Culture Shock Dance Center grand opening
Culture Shock Dance Center will hold their grand opening Sept. 20 and 21 from 12:00 noon to 6:00 p.m. The event will feature free dance classes, performances, giveaways & drawings. San Diego PFLAG meeting, Sept. 22
The speaker for this month’s San Diego PFLAG meeting will be Shawn Ingram, the Director of Development for The Center. As part of his duties, Ingram is in charge of media and public communication. The Center is the second oldest and third largest GLBT center in the country. Ingram will explain about the many varied services The Center offers at no or low cost to the GLBT community.
