Brian Main has provided mental health services for more than five years, and began working in a private practice a year ago, when his former professor, Ellen Stein, a respected forensic psychologist, brought him on as her psychological assistant. “Building a practice has been a challenge, but one that I am proud to be involved in, given the nature of my work and my desire to serve those in my community,” Main said.

As a therapist in the GLBT community, Main specializes in individual and couples therapy, addressing anxiety and depression, abuse and trauma, sexuality, anger management, sexual assault, and drug and alcohol abuse. “I also offer services to persons seeking personal growth, improved social skills, and assertiveness training,” said Main, who is completing the required number of hours toward his doctorate degree in clinical and forensic psychology.

Providing services as a registered psychological assistant, and being supervised by a clinical psychologist, Main is able to offer effective therapy at a more affordable cost.

“Because I live and work in the LGBT community, I am familiar and capable of dealing with many of the unique issues individuals in our community face,” he said.

As a child, Main said he read many comic books, and often identified with the heroes in the storylines. Entering the psychology field was a very clear way of exercising his desire to help others, he said. “Although I would like to save everyone with whom I work, I recognize that my role as a therapist is to help my clients become the heroes in their own personal lives through education, support and guidance.”

Main and his clients work together as a team, developing achievable goals and mapping out realistic plans for reaching such goals.
