iN + GraiN: A fund-raiser reception celebrating the iN + GraiN exhibit at the Museum of Photographic Arts will be held from 6:30-9 p.m. The exhibit includes banner-sized photographs documenting the lives of refugee and immigrant youth living in San Diego that will cover buildings, fences and vacant store fronts at eight different exhibit sites in Southeast San Diego for three months. The fund-raiser will feature a multi-media presentation discussing the scope and significance of the public arts project by Pulitzer Prize winning photographer Don Bartletti, as well as conversation, appetizers, and cocktails. Lesbians of Color Picnic: The Good Times Travel & Social Club was created to give women from all over the country a place to meet and socialize. While the group is geared toward lesbians of color, all women 30 and older are welcome. The next event will be a barbecue social right here in San Diego. The afternoon will include a barbecue, side dishes, and volleyball and badminton. The organizers remind women to not worry about knowing anyone, as “the women are friendly and life is short.” Interested women must visit the group’s Web site to receive an invitation. ‘www.lesbianofcolor.com’ Paula Cole & Mandy Moore: Grammy-winning singer/songwriter Paula Cole is back and better than ever. After a series of live performances in select cities, Cole is hitting the road on a national tour with Mandy Moore to support both artists’ recent releases. Cole will perform a number of songs from her new album Courage, while Moore will show-off selections from her new release of organic folk songs titled Wild Oats. The unique styles of these female artists will compliment each other as they hit the stage at 4th and B. The 7 p.m. show is open to those 21 years and older. Tickets are $25 at www.ticketmaster.com.
JPride Jewish Women’s Chavurah: The JPride Women’s Chavurah met for the first time in March of 2007.
Since then, this newly formed group has decided to meet regularly on the fourth Sunday of each month at 10:30 a.m. for a brunch potluck at the Lawrence Family Jewish Community Center (JCC). The group is welcoming and encourages new women to attend. The JCC is located at 4126 Executive Drive in La Jolla. The event takes place on the first floor in the Music Room. 858-362-1347
The Beyonce Experience: Superstar Beyonce hits the stage at San Diego State University’s Cox Arena as part of her The Beyonce Experience North American tour. Fans will be popping “to the left, to the left” as Ms. Knowles performs hits such as “Irreplaceable,” “Beautiful Liar,” “Déjà vu,” “Naughty Girl,” and more. Beyonce’s recently released album B’Day is soon to be followed by the release of the artist’s newest album, Irreemplazable, which is an eight-track Spanish language EP featuring select songs from the previous album. Summer Organ Festival Finale: The Spreckels Organ Society finishes off its 20th International Summer Organ Festival with a special concert on Aug. 27. The finale concert will include performances by San Diego Civic Organist Carol Williams, Clark Sterling, and other special guests. Bingo at The Center: Play bingo and support the programs and services of the San Diego LGBT Community Center! Admission for 10 games is $10, which includes a six-card game pad. Indie By Design: Say It Records is presenting an Indie By Design event dedicated to non-violence. The Indie By Design series was created as an ongoing multi-city showcase promoting awareness of the outstanding independent music, art, and businesses that exist in our communities. The Aug. 29 concert includes performances by favorites like Margo, Randi Driscoll, JD Boucharde, Audible Mainframe, Danielle Lo Presti and the Masses, and Mister 3. Cover charge is $5 and parking is free. The event is for those 21 and older. Culture & Cocktails: The DJ spins, exotic beverages flow, artworks dazzle, and museum visitors glow at the San Diego Museum of Art’s popular sundown series, Culture & Cocktails. Bring a friend, meet someone new, and experience art in a whole new way. From 6-9 p.m., enjoy an evening at the museum as you explore a garden of earthly delights. Visitors will have the opportunity to wander through 100 lusciously painted canvases by Monet and friends featured in Impressionist Giverny. Immediately following the event is the official after-party at the W Hotel. Admission to Culture & Cocktails is free with museum admission, which is $10 for adults.
