Mary’s topples Trojans in Open Division play
Published Thursday, 25-Sep-2003 in issue 822
The AFCSL continued its Fall Ball season this weekend in Poway with the number one team in the Open Division, the Moby Dick’s Trojans picking up their first loss of the season to Hamburger Mary’s. The Mary’s win creates a three-way tie for first place in the competitive division that includes Mary’s the Trojans, and the Bourbon Street Brewers.
“We were very confident,” said Jim Case of Hamburger Mary’s “We have a strong team and our pitcher Joe, well he is always on, but today he made some key plays to snare us a couple of double plays. Our outfielders made some great catches, but out hitting is what won the game for us. Every time they would come back, we would get that many more runs.”
Mary’s took a six run lead into the last inning of the game and held Moby’s to just three runs to win the game, 14-11. Mary’s also picked up a win against Team Star. Star jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the game but Mary’s battled back to win the game, 17-9. Moby Dick’s bounced back from their first loss to beat Team Star, 18-5, as well. Rounding out the teams tied for first place are the Bourbon Street Brewers, who picked up wins against Interactive Male (15-11) and the J&B Tornados (13-8).
The Open Recreation Division was plagued with injuries during the early games this past weekend. In the 9:00 a.m. game between Red Envelope and the Live.com Bandits an on the field collision sent two of the Red Envelope players to the hospital with teeth knocked out. Red Envelope ended up forfeiting the game as the rest of the players on the team wanted to accompany them to the hospital. Then in the following game between Bacchus House and the GLT Alano Club, the Bacchus house pitcher took a line drive in the face that also knocked a tooth out.
Things got back on track in the 11:00 a.m. hour with Moby Dick’s Magnums playing the Live.com Bandits. The Magnums’ second baseman, Brian Schultz, had some great defensive plays as well as some great hitting that contributed to the Magnums’ 8-5 win.

Team Star currently has a 2–4 record in Fall Ball
“Our second game was against the GLT,” Andrew Reed, coach of the Magnums, said. “They wanted to take it from us because we took it from them last weekend. We went three innings 0-0 and then finally we started to get runs and our batters started to hit. Everybody just played great.”
The final score was Magnums eight, GLT Alano Club three. The win keeps the Magnums’ perfect season intact for another week.
In the Women’s B Division it’s a close race, but the tie for first place has finally been broken. Last week Aberration and Bottoms Up were running neck and neck for first place, but with a pair of losses this week Bottoms Up has been relegated to third place. First up, Bottoms Up faced second place Powerhouse Gym, who beat them 9-8. Bottoms up also had a rough second game, falling to Aberration, 11-10.
Last but not least, Six Degrees is the top team in the Women’s C Division with their 3-3 record, but they only have a half game lead over second place Hairspray. Hairspray proved that they indeed are a force to be reckoned with, beating Six Degrees in a 9-2 game.
