Finest City Squares presents a new GLBT square dancing class
The Finest City Squares of San Diego (FCS) is starting a new GLBT square dance beginners’ class this September. The class meets every Wednesday with open enrollment on Sept. 5, 12 or 19. These first three nights will be free of charge, so new participants will be able to give the sport a try.
According to the FCS group, “square dancing, though it may have a bad rep from elementary school experiences, is a lot of fun, particularly in a GLBT crowd. Gay square dancing is high energy dancing.” The local San Diego club is a very active club, as it participates in many gay and straight events throughout the city and country. The group regularly performs in the San Diego LGBT Pride parade.
Square Dancing is a growing activity among the GLBT community with clubs in Japan, Canada, and all over the United States. In Southern California there are clubs in Long Beach, Pasadena, Riverside, Palm Springs, Santa Ana, and Los Angeles.
FCS dances in the Veterans War Memorial Building, located at 3325 Zoo Dr., at the north end of the San Diego Zoo parking lot. Parking is free and abundant. The class meets on Wednesday evenings from 7:30-9 p.m., but participants are encouraged to arrive at 7 p.m. to “meet, greet, and register.” Bringing a partner is not necessary and no special attire is needed, although participants should dress comfortably. More information is available on the group’s Web site at www.iagsdc.org/finestcity.
LGBT Alumni Chapter forming at San Diego State University
Through the school’s Alumni Association, a group of GLBT alumni of San Diego State University are working to form an LGBT Chapter of the SDSU Alumni Association. A number of other specialized communities already have established alumni chapters, including African American Alumni, Jewish Aztecs, Social Work Alumni, Bay Area Aztecs and many others. The purpose of the chapter program is to reconnect alumni to SDSU and to other alumni who share a similar profession, culture, geographic location or special interest. Chapter members enjoy the benefits of the Alumni Association in addition to the many chapter benefits.
The group needs at least 20 interested alumni to be recognized as an official alumni chapter. Ideas for the group include networking and social activities, support of the SDSU GLBT student community, establishing a scholarship fund for GLBT students, and fund-raising for the future SDSU LGBT Resource Center. Level of involvement in the chapter is up to the individual member, and can be as small as signing up and being on the list-serv, to serving on the chapter’s board of directors.
Chapter membership is available at no additional cost to members of the SDSU Alumni Association. If you are interested in being a part of the SDSU LGBT Alumni Chapter or for more information e-mail lgbtrc@gmail.com or call 619-316-9197.
