Homos, Hoochies, & Hooligans: Calling all homos, hoochies, and hooligans – you know who you are! Everyone 21 years and older is invited to head over to Kadan on the first and third Friday of every month for DJs, live bands, dancers and drink specials. Drink specials are served up by the Rubber Rose’s own Miss Lea, and a good old time is promised. Homos, Hoochies, & Hooligans begins at 10 p.m. and runs until we close the bar! Free cover. San Diego Women’s Drum Circle: Women Drummers of San Diego gather on the first Saturday of each month to share and exchange rhythmic energy. The October 2007 gathering will be very special, as it will be in celebration of the group’s ninth anniversary! The event will take place at Paradise Point on Mission Bay. Everyone is welcome to attend, and drums and rhythm instruments will be available for sharing. There will be a potluck at 5 p.m., and drumming fro 7-9 p.m. A $5 donation is requested.
Ascension: Join Robin Roth and Tom King at the Kava Lounge for the best in dark underground dance music. The special guest will be DJ Precursor, who is also in the local band Shaolin Punk. He has spun all over San Diego and Tijuana, at clubs such as Therapy, Cathedral, and Sin Factory. Also, attendees will be given the chance to win tickets to The Jesus and Mary Chain show Oct. 24 at 4th and B. The event is open to those 21 years and older, and cover is just $5. Trolley Dances 2007: Explore some of San Diego’s most diverse downtown neighborhoods along the San Diego Trolley Line. Start out at the new Smart Corner City College trolley station and experience an array of public art works and site-specific dances along the ride. Some of the nation’s premier choreographers have come on board to help choreograph the performances. Tickets range from $10 to $25 and include a free one-day trolley pass. www.sandiegodancetheater.org
The Busy World is Hushed: Diversionary Theatre will present Keith Bunin’s new play, The Busy World is Hushed, as the second show of its 2007-08 season. Running Oct. 4-28, The Busy World is Hushed premiered last year at Playwrights Horizons in New York City. The play tells the story of Hannah, a minister and Bible scholar, who finds her faith at odds with that of Thomas, her estranged, wayward son. But when an inquisitive young writer hired to assist Hannah with her latest publication learns painful secrets from Hannah’s past, she spies a risky, unconventional opportunity for reconciliation. Women’s Country Dance Group: Free Women’s Country Western Dance classes are held in The Center’s ballroom on Mondays from 7-8:30 p.m. Beginners are encouraged to attend and no partner is necessary. Organizers say, “just bring your sweet self, a willingness to learn and have fun!” The four-week October dance series on Country Waltz started Oct. 1. The instructor, Geri Bartusch, will have participants gliding around the floor with ease. Bartusch also includes a line dance at the end of each class. Leather or leather-like shoe soles are suggested. No RSVP is required. The Center is located at 3909 Centre St. in Hillcrest. www.thecentersd.org

Bingo at the Center: Play bingo and support the programs and services of the San Diego LGBT Community Center. Admission for 10 games is $10, which includes a six-card game pad. Increase your chances of winning by purchasing additional game packs for only $5 each. The prize for the first nine games is $50 and for the last game $100. What’s more, six guests will win non-cash prizes just for walking in the door – everything from Starbucks cards to donated gift certificates from local restaurants! To top that off, if this week is your birthday, come play Bingo and receive a free bingo dauber and 10-pack of pull tabs. The early bird game begins at 6:50 p.m., with regular games running from 7-9 p.m. All players must be 18 years or older. Ricardo Vera Gallery: Local artists competed in this year’s Fiesta Del Sol-San Diego for the opportunity to win a month-long gallery exhibit at the Ricardo Vela Studio Gallery. This year’s winners are Ruth Salazar, Conchita Vesco, and Santos Orellana. These talented artists reflect the richness and growing number of Latino Artists in San Diego. The works will be on display at the gallery through Oct. 30. Big Gay BBQ: The San Diego State University LGBT Resource Center & LGBT Student Union invite the community to campus for the now legendary Big Gay BBQ! For 15 consecutive semesters this event has grown to become one of the most anticipated events for students, faculty/staff, alumni, and of course, community members. The event includes a free BBQ, date auction, entertainment, information booths and more! Typically, more than 500 people attend the event, so guests are encouraged to arrive early to get food! Universal Preview Party: As they say, “Isn’t anticipation a bitch?” Join the creators and staff of the highly anticipated Hillcrest night spot, Universal, for a sneak peek at the décor and atmosphere of Universal and Dish restaurant opening later this year. San Diego Asian Film Festival: Help kick of the San Diego Asian Film Festival’s eighth annual event by joining the cast and crew of the film, Finishing the Game, at the Opening Night Party. The party will be held at the Airport Lounge and is free for SDAFF members, pass holders and Finishing the Game attendees. The event is for those 21 years and older. The San Diego Asian Film Festival will run from Oct. 11-18 with most films being shown at the UltraStar Mission Valley Cinemas in Hazard Center.
