Community Prescription Center offering free informational consultations about Medicare Part D changes
Community Prescription Center, located in Hillcrest, Palm Springs and Cathedral City, Calif., is offering free one-on-one consultations to clients grappling with the numerous and complicated options facing them this month regarding 2008 benefit revisions made to Medicare Part D.
Since Medicare Part D was implemented two years ago for seniors or anyone living with HIV and other chronic illnesses, they’ve been afforded the opportunity between Nov. 15 and Dec. 31 each year to make changes to their health care plans. The task can be daunting, since the only single source that provides a full overview of the program’s annual revisions is found on the Medicare Web site.
“A good percentage of people enrolled in Medicare Part D don’t even realize that they have this specific 45-day opportunity to select health care options that they’ll have to live with for the next 12 months,” says Robin Williamson, vice president and co-owner of the gay-owned Community Prescription Center. “And for those who have computer access and start combing through all of the online data, they must be familiar with drug formularies and drug tiers just to start with before choosing options that duly fit their needs.”
Community Prescription Center has provided free, personalized counseling sessions to more than 1,000 of its clients at Southern California locations since Medicare Part D went into effect. It will begin accepting appointments on Nov. 15.
The pharmacy opened in Palm Springs in 2000 and in San Diego in 2002, adding a third location last year in Cathedral City. Unlike larger, franchised pharmacies, Community Prescription Center is staffed to advise patients, as well as its referring physicians, about certain drug options based on the latest clinical data.
“Additionally, independent drug stores like ourselves go the extra mile to push for authorization from numerous insurance companies for specific drugs that doctors have already recommended to their patients. Bigger pharmacies don’t always have the time to do that,” Williamson said.
Williamson is available to discuss the upcoming changes to Medicare Part D for 2008, in general or specific terms. To arrange an interview, call Frank Sabatini Jr. at 619-925-3794.

Campus Pride announces dates for gay friendly college admission fair this spring at UCSD
Campus Pride just announced dates for a national college admission fair to be held in spring 2008 specifically designed for out GLBT students to find GLBT friendly colleges and universities.
The fair will be held on Friday, Apr. 11, on the campus of the University of California, San Diego. Free, and open to the public, the fair allows students and their families the opportunity to interact with colleges and universities that value GLBT people and their allies. Registration is open to any college or university across the United States. Each fair will also feature expert advice about GLBT friendly colleges, scholarship resources and even effective tips for campus visits.
“High school students and their families want to attend campuses that are a welcoming and safe place to learn, live and grow. The same is true of LGBT students who are often overlooked in the recruitment process,” said Shane Windmeyer, executive director of Campus Pride and author of The Advocate College Guide for LGBT Students. “The LGBT-friendly college admission fair showcases campuses who are LGBT-friendly and who want LGBT & ally students. It sends a clear message: ‘Gay students are welcome, even celebrated on this campus.’”
The fairs are held in conjunction with the LGBT-Friendly Campus Climate Index, the only online resource of its kind that assists colleges and universities in learning ways to improve their GLBT campus life. The index can be accessed online at www.campusclimateindex.org.
“The LGBT-Friendly Campus Climate Index demonstrates how colleges are ‘coming out’ to provide programs and services for LGBT and ally students. The idea that LGBT student populations are a part of the campus recruitment and retention efforts is just another part of this changing dynamic,” said Windmeyer.
To learn more about the upcoming Campus Pride College Admission Fair or to register a campus 30 days prior to the deadline, visit Campus Pride at www.campuspride.org or contact info@campuspride.org or 704-277-6710.
