“I am for same-sex marriage. ... From a personal standpoint, it would be hypocritical to look at a community that has literally supported me when no one else thought I had anything to offer, meaning in terms of commercial success. ... The community remained faithful to me and supported me and saved my life and my home and allowed me to take care of people that I love. ... This community afforded me that opportunity so that I would not end up on Skid Row – this community solely. And church people did not do that. ... [U]nconditional love has been demonstrated more in this [gay] community than in any other community, so why not allow them to have this same type of love that they have given others? ... I don’t have anything to base it [support for same-sex marriage] on, I’m not a Bible scholar or anything – but my own personal life would be nothing without the gay community.”
Singer Jennifer Holliday of Dreamgirls fame to the Palm Springs gay magazine The BottomLine, Nov. 9.
“As president, I will use the bully pulpit to urge states to treat same-sex couples with full equality in their family and adoption laws. I personally believe that civil unions represent the best way to secure that equal treatment. But I also believe that the federal government should not stand in the way of states that want to decide on their own how best to pursue equality for gay and lesbian couples – whether that means a domestic partnership, a civil union or a civil marriage. ... I support the full and unqualified repeal of the federal Defense of Marriage Act.”
Presidential candidate Barack Obama in a column published in the Chicago gay newspaper Windy City Times, Nov. 14.
“It is because sexism and misogyny are so pervasive in this culture that gay men, lesbians, and bisexuals still endure rampant discrimination and abuse. I know it must crush those ‘straight acting’ gay men and lesbians to be told that after all their hard work to cultivate the ability to pass, the plain fact is they will NEVER succeed. These men will always be seen as the ‘sissies’ and the ‘faggots’ and these women will always be ‘man-hating dykes’ until we dismantle patriarchy, corral sexism, and vanquish their blood-sucking sibling, homophobia.”
National Center for Lesbian Rights Executive Director Kate Kendell in a Nov. 26 blog post.
“Since Sept. 11, 2001, the insecure cronies of a woefully incompetent, underqualified and arguably unelected American president have resorted to all manner of dirty tricks in a conspiracy to solidify political power and hoard personal wealth for a select Republican few. They have rarely even attempted to cover their footprints, preferring instead to explain away their manipulations as evils necessary in pursuit of their war on terror.”
From Matt Mills’ editorial in the Nov. 22 edition of the Toronto gay newspaper Xtra!.
“If there is some sort of creation, a piece of art, a TV show, a column or a book or a movie or a statue or a blog or a movement, a wine bottle or sexual position or Jesus-shaped dildo that somehow deeply threatens the various ultraconservative sects of Christian-blasted America to the point where their pale, dour representatives demand boycotts and distribute angry pamphlets and try to stop people from experiencing said hunk of culture because of how negatively it portrays their seething, condemnatory God, well, you know it’s time to break out the Champagne. Or buy that book. Or get very, very naked.”
San Francisco Chronicle columnist Mark Morford, Nov. 30.
