This weekend, many people will visit Phoenix for the Southwest Leather Conference. The Phoenix leather folk have remained committed to leather brotherhood and education –despite the impending danger of heat stroke or, worse yet, cod piece rash. (Think of jock itch without the muscles.)

The Southwest Leather Conference offers more than 30 workshops presented by the finest educators from the leather and BDSM communities around the world. If the excellent education opportunities aren’t enough, the conference also hosts the Southwest Master/slave contest and Bootblack competitions. With all the dedication and hard work our brothers and sisters put in, we should show them the support they deserve. This year, San Diego Leather Pride will be an official sponsor of Southwest Leather Conference with members of our community making the trek to that unbearable, dry desert region to represent. Hopefully, none of us will have a heat stroke or get cod piece rash, but you can be sure we’ll return with a “leather heart and spirit” one only finds in the Southwest.

A few days later, we’re heading to Mid-Atlantic Leather Weekend in our nation’s capitol. As the story goes, MAL began as an intimate leather cocktail party in New York City and through time has evolved into one of the most widely respected leather weekends in the world. Hosted by the Centaur Motorcycle Club of D.C., MAL now includes the Mr. Mid-Atlantic Leather Contest, two leather dances, an exhibit hall, brunch and the appropriately titled “Leather Cocktails.” Although some leather peeps are just there to “be titleholders” or “do titleholders” there is loads of back room, dirty-dungeon sex. Nothing gets the wood standing knowing you’re banging, beating or blowing in full view of our nation’s giant phallic icon – The Washington Monument.

If you’re staying local, Bears San Diego presents Sun Bears Weekend Jan. 17-21. Registration and check-in throughout the weekend will be at the host hotel, Park Manor Suites. Warning: small elevator + big hairy men = plan accordingly. Friday night, there will be a reception at Pecs but everybody would probably be there anyway. Warning: average bar + lots of big hairy men = find a spot and stay there. Saturday afternoon there’s a historic railway ride that will stop in “Bearret” junction for some of the best barbecue you’ve ever tasted. Trust me … no one knows good barbecue like a bear knows good barbecue. Later that evening, the VIP reception, buffet and Mr. Bear San Diego Contest followed by L.L. Bear will be held at Rich’s. Warning: Dance floor + lots of big hairy men who’ve been eating non-stop all weekend with their shirts off bumping and grinding = stay out of the way. Of course there’s more food on Sunday with a brunch, Bingo with the Sisters, a play party at Vulcan Sauna from noon until 4 p.m., (the warning here is just too easy – won’t even go there), a victory party at The Hole followed by dinner at Brian’s. All this eating, drinking, dancing, contesting and bear bonding isn’t enough for one weekend so there’s a Farewell Brunch at Baja Betty’s on Monday from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m.. Warning: limited seating + lots of big hairy hungover hungry men = get there at 10 a.m.

To end the month and begin the San Diego Leather season of 2008, Adam Latham is hosting a Blackout party at the San Diego Eagle on Jan. 26 beginning at 9 p.m. It will be sponsored by CLAW Nation/Recon. It’s about time we brought the backroom back to San Diego. The Eagle normally has its underwear party that night so we’re taking it a step further by turning off the lights. With a donation at the door, you’ll be given a small flashlight that’ll help you make your way around the bar. Then just turn it off and feel your way around. Porn stars Jude Ryde, Rocky West and others will be there to help with the handsy work. The underwear contest will happen at midnight with a $100 prize.
