We are happy to announce our move to the commentary section of the Gay and Lesbian Times. We hope to continue to bring you news and information about the GLBT Latino community from a uniquely Latino perspective. We will also continue to share not so well-known information about the contributions of Latinos in the U.S. Lastly, we will continue our commitment to keep you informed in both English and Spanish.

We hope to gain more momentum and a greater readership in 2008. Thank you to everyone who supported us in 2007, we hope you will continue to do so this year!

We leave 2007 behind, a year marked by triumphs and tragedies. Here are a few things to reflect on:

There were a few reasons to celebrate in 2007. One, in particular, was the celebration of Frida Kahlo’s 100th birthday, soon to be an annual celebration to help raise funds for Latino Services at The Center. It is also an opportunity to celebrate the life of one of Mexico’s most renowned female artists and activists.

In contrast, the inhumane raids by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), and racial profiling by immigration officers as well as other law enforcement agencies added to the conflict surrounding immigration issues in the United States. In particular, we want to call attention to the harassment and blatant racism immigrants endured during the San Diego fires.

One troubling aspect of this issue is the number of our own people (other Latinos) who contribute to this oppression by working for ICE.

On a positive note, The Center hosted a very informative immigration forum with speakers including Enrique Morones, the founder of Border Angels, immigration lawyer Lilia Velasquez, Andrea Guerrero, from the ACLU, and Reverend Mary Moreno Richardson.

In 2008, the Latino GLBT community still faces many challenges. One of the most important things to consider this year is the upcoming elections. It is incredibly important that those of us who can vote do. Latinos in the United States are a great political force – remember “¡Si Se Puede! (We can do it!)” We can make change if we are united as a community. We all have something to offer. Vote, support and mobilize!

Every month we will continue to honor an individual who has proven his or her commitment and loyalty to the GLBT Latino community in San Diego. We will continue to call our honoree the Adelita or Ché of the Month. Adelita and Ché represent strong, revolutionary women and men who fight for social justice.

Adelita of the Month: Aida Mancillas

This month we’d like to honor Aida Mancillas. Aida is a Hillcrest resident and nationally exhibited artist and writer who writes about the role of the arts in developing communities and creates art about the U.S./Mexico border region. Her public artworks have won national awards. Aida is a wonderful woman who recognizes the commitment of being a leader even at the risk of her health. Aida is a strong role model and community activist with a great deal of strength, and she is dedicated to the GLBT Latino community.

Aida, thank you so much for all your hard work and dedication. You are a true inspiration to us all!

Estamos muy felices anunciar nuestra movida a la sección del comentario del Gay and Lesbian Times. En esta sección esperamos continuar trayéndoles noticias y la información de la comunidad GLBT Latino con una perspectiva únicamente Latina. También continuaremos compartiendo la información no tan conocida sobre las contribuciones de Latinos en los estados unidos. Últimamente, continuaremos informándolos en inglés y español. Dejamos atrás el 2007, un año lleno de triunfos y de tragedias. Aquí están unas cosas en que deseamos mirar para tras:

En el 2007 tuvimos algunas razones para cual celebrar. Una razón en particular fue por la gran Pachanga de Frida que fue no solo un evento cultural para recaudar fondos para los servicios Latinos pero un evento donde celebramos a una gran mujer, artista activista y mexicana.

La situación de inmigración del año 2007 nos trajo tanta discordia, no solo en redadas inhumanas que fueron conducidas por el gobierno, pero también en el perfil racial del los oficiales (La migra). Queremos llamar especial atención a la tragedia de los incendios en el condado de San Diego en donde mucha gente perdió sus casas y el racismo y discriminación hacia la comunidad Latina fue manifestada durante esta crisis

Una de las cosas que nos incomoda sobre este tema es ver que nuestra propia raza contribuya en este tipo de opresión, por ejemplo personas de nuestra comunidad, o otras minorías, que trabajan para instituciones como la migra

En una nota positive sobre este tema, el Foro que tuvo el Center sobre inmigración fue un gran éxito en donde participaron el gran activista Enrique Morones, fundador de Border Angels, Licenciada de Inmigración Lilia Velásquez, Andrea Guerrero de ACLU, y Reverenda Canon Mary Moreno Richardson.

Empezamos el 2008 un año lleno de retos para nuestra comunidad Latina y GLBT

En este 2008 uno de los cambios mas importantes son las elecciones electorales, en la que mas que nunca es muy importante que todos los que podemos votar estemos presentes, en representación de de todos nuestros hermanos/as que no tienen la oportunidad. Los Latinos en estados unidos somos una gran fuerza política, recuerda que ¡Si se puede! Y hay que recordar que para ser cambios significantes tenemos que ser un pueblo unido, todos tenemos algo que ofrecer

¡Votar, Apoyar y Movilizar!

Adelita del mes: Aida Mancillas

Cada mes continuaremos honrando a un individuo que ha probado su lealtad a la comunidad GLBT Latino en el condado de San Diego. Seguiremos llamándole la Adelita o el Ché del mes. Adelita y Ché representan a mujeres y hombres fuertes, revolucionarios que luchan para la justicia social. Este mes quisiéramos honrar a Aida Mancillas. Aida es un residente de Hillcrest, artista y escritora reconocida nacionalmente que escribe sobre el papel de arte en comunidades que están desarrollándose, y crea arte sobre la región de la frontera de U.S./México. Sus ilustraciones públicas han ganado concesiones nacionales. Aida es una gran mujer que reconoce el compromiso del liderazgo a pesar de las adversidades que ha pasado. Sigue luchando por nuestros derechos en nuestra comunidad Latina y GLBT .Hay que admirar la fuerza y dedicación de esta gran luchadora.

Aida eres un gran ejemplo de que realmente si se puede! Mil gracias y todo nuestro respeto.
