Cabaret Dances: Enjoy a sophisticated, yet casual evening of modern dance, culture, music, art, wine and tapas. Jean Isaacs and the San Diego Dance Theater return with the seventh annual Cabaret Dances to be held at the San Diego Museum of Art’s Copley Auditorium. Nine extraordinary dancers will present four evenings of modern dance that embodies the Latin spirit, including samba, African tango, salsa and more. This special event is presented in conjunction with the exhibition Everett Gee Jackson/San Diego Modern, 1920–1955. Jackson established a studio near Guadalajara in the 1920s and was greatly influenced by Diego Rivera and José Clemente Orozco. From that moment on, Mexican motifs and styles dominated his art. Cabaret Dances runs from Jan. 17-19 at 8 p.m. and on Jan. 20 at 6 p.m. Admission ranges from $10-$25. The San Diego Museum of Art is located at 1450 El Prado in Balboa Park. www.sdmart.org

Mr. San Diego Bear: Come witness the selection of Mr. Bear San Diego 2008 at the Mr. Bear San Diego contest and show! The evening will include a blessing by the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, an appearance by The Cash Cow Corps, and Matt Bragg, an openly gay stand up comic, will perform. The evening will be hosted by Miss Roxy Bleau. VIP admission is $30, which includes a reception buffet at 6 p.m. General admission is $15 for the contest and show at 7 p.m. A special L.L. Bear Dance at 9:30 p.m. will follow. The events will take place at Rich’s nightclub located at 1051 University Ave. in Hillcrest. www.sunbearsweekend.com

Swing Dance Extravaganza: The David Patrone $10,000 Swing Dance Extravaganza is the biggest swing dance competition prize payout in the world. The event will run every Sunday night starting Jan. 6 through Mar. 30 from 5-8 p.m. at Viejas Casino’s Dreamcatcher Lounge. Bands are brought in from all over the country to perform while hundreds of swing dancers compete each night. One of Southern California’s most successful band leaders and Jazz singers, David Patrone, is the host. Past performers at this event include George Gee, Royal Crown Revue, Hot Rod Lincoln, Steve Lucky and the Rhumba Bums, Big Time Operator, Jonathan Stout, and of course, David Patrone. All People’s Breakfast: The Center for Social Advocacy invites the community to its 20th Annual All People’s Breakfast. The 7:30 a.m. breakfast celebrates the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and will be held at Golden Hall in the San Diego Community Concourse. The program will include presentations by community leaders and activists and a keynote speech by Odetta. Tickets are $25 for main-floor tables, which include a full breakfast and reserved seating, and $10 for general admission, which includes a continental breakfast. A benefit concert will be held later that day from 5-8 p.m. featuring Odetta, and some of San Diego’s acclaimed emerging vocalists, musicians, dancers and poets. The concert will also be held at Golden Hall, and all proceeds will benefit the Center for Social Advocacy. B-I-N-G-O: Play bingo and support the programs and services of the Center. Admission for 10 games is $10, which includes a six-card game pad. Additional game packs are $5 each. The prize for the first nine games is $50 and for the last game $100. The early bird game begins at 6:50 p.m., with regular games running from 7-9 p.m. All players must be 18 years or older. Bingo is played at The Center, 3909 Centre St. in Hillcrest. www.thecentersd.org

Siren: Siren is a women’s open mic whose mission is to provide a safe space for women to support and inspire one another via the expression of the creative arts.
All forms of expression on the mic are welcome, including spoken word, music, dance, drag, comedy, activism and more. Siren takes place on the fourth Wednesday of every month from 8-9:30 p.m., with open mic sign ups at 7:30 p.m. L-Train will be January’s featured performer. While everyone is welcome to attend and support the show, the mic is reserved for women. The show is free and donations are accepted. The Daddy Machine’: Diversionary Theatre presents the world premiere of the family-friendly musical The Daddy Machine as the fourth show of its 2007-2008 season. Running Jan. 18-27, The Daddy Machine was commissioned by Diversionary. Based on the book by Johnny Valentine, this new musical celebrates GLBT families. The show is the result of Diversionary’s desire to present a show that the entire family, including children, can attend and enjoy. Tickets range from $10-$18.
