I’m not the only one who is disappointed that the little furry groundhog (not to be confused with a badge ... or beaver for that matter) named Punxsutawney Phil emerged from his burrow, saw his shadow, and proclaimed: “As I look around me, a bright sky I see, and a shadow beside me. Six more weeks of winter it will be!”
OK, I’m a nerd. I admit it. But the point is I think we’ve all noticed the weather outside has been less than stellar, and winter has made it known it’s here to stay a bit longer.
Don’t let the rain and cold get you down, though! There’s still plenty to do indoors (I know what you’re thinking, dirty bird) and outdoors as well (if weather permits) in the month of March!
Beer bust for charity
On March 8, from 7-11 p.m., Urban Mo’s is hosting a beer/soda bust to help raise funds for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) and members of Team In Training.
LLS is the world’s largest nonprofit health organization dedicated entirely to finding a cure for leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and myeloma. The society has 68 chapters in the U.S. and Canada that support research, patient financial aid, education, and community services.
The low price of $5 will buy you 10 tickets, to be used on either soda or beer (Bud Light draft only). All ticket sales will go to LLS.
Urban Mo’s is located on 308 University Ave.
Graffiti at Basic
Every Tuesday starting at 8 p.m., Basic Urban Kitchen and Bar and schugariver present Graffiti, a series of events featuring interactive urban art, visual media, music and fashion from local talent.
Upcoming shows include Inked (Tattoo Art & Demo) on March 11, Surf & Skate Fashion on March 18, and Spray Art on April 1. Resident and guest DJs highlight the event with the latest in electro, garage, hip hop, funk, disco and freestyle beats throughout the evening. Entry is free, but only open to those ages 21 and up.
If Tuesdays aren’t your thing, Basic along with Bound Contemporary Dance, McCaleb Dance, and Sushi Performance and Visual Art bring Bottle Night to the East Village on the first Monday of each month through May (April 7 and May 5), a series of short urban dance performances and films. Tickets are “pay-what-you-can” and the evening begins at 7:30 p.m. This is also a 21 and up event.
While your visual and auditory senses are being stimulated, don’t forget to satisfy your sense of taste by indulging in one of the popular New Haven thin crust brick oven pizzas and other delectable items offered on the Basic menu.
Basic is located on 410 10th Ave. and open Monday – Saturday from 11:30 a.m. to 2 a.m. and Sunday from 12:30 p.m. to 2 a.m. For more information on these events and on Basic, visit www.barbasic.com.
Swank it to me
Also on March 8, from 7-10 p.m., Jill Johnson of moRe sUper and Dr. Beau Casey of Chiropractique will bring an evening of class, art, and charity with Swank, a fund-raising event at Bamboo Lounge benefiting Being Alive and celebrating Chiropractique’s third year of service.

Being Alive is a valuable public service agency, established in 1989, whose mission is to provide support and resources to persons living with HIV/AIDS, including assistance with moving residences, peer counseling and holistic health services.
As a part of the event, guests will enjoy $3 glasses of sangria blanc and complimentary appetizers. Samples of work from various artists from previous moRe sUper art shows will provide the backdrop to the event, and are available for purchase. A one year service of Bliss massage from Chiropractique will also be raffled. All proceeds will go to Being Alive.
Swank is open to the public and a suggested donation of $5 to $10 is accepted at the door. Dress is semi-formal elegant couture. For more information, call 619-269-9909.
Bamboo Lounge is located at 1475 University Ave.
Eat at Hawthorn’s
By now, most people who have visited Hawthorn’s Restaurant Lounge may know the new owners, Michael Mack and David Cohen, have made many changes to the long-standing eatery, including a front patio, a new sound system and colored lights to add to the ambiance and existing decor.
Recently, Hawthorn’s has extended its hours of operation and are now open seven days a week to satisfy your palate. Lunch is available from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., dinner from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m., and the bistro menu is available until midnight. In addition, Saturdays and Sundays feature a brunch from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. So, don’t miss out on the excellent food and great prices every day of the week! As the Gay & Lesbian Times restaurant critic Frank Sabatini Jr. said, “Hawthorn’s tastes as good as it looks.”
Hawthorn’s Restaurant Lounge is located on 2895 University Avenue. Reservations can be made online at www.hawthornssd.com or by calling 619-295-1688.
Dive-In by the pool
Every Wednesday, The Pearl Hotel in Point Loma presents Dive-In Movies, a free “cinema social” mixing eclectic films with socializing over food and drink by a vintage, oyster-shaped, saltwater swimming pool.
Movies including Almost Famous on March 5 and Best in Show on March 26 are projected on a huge screen with full sound by the poolside lounge and restaurant. Showtime is at 8 p.m., food is served until 10 p.m., and the bar is open until midnight. Seating is first come, first served, but cabanas can be reserved for parties of six to eight people by calling 619-226-6100 in advance. For all those thinking about skinny dipping (it’s cold out boys, so consider shrinkage), the pool is open only to hotel guests.
However, if you have a little too much fun and can’t drive home, The Pearl welcomes guests to Play & Stay. At the stroke of midnight, guests can visit the front desk and reserve any available room for $79, plus tax. That beats the cost of a DUI!
The Pearl Hotel is located on 1410 Rosecrans St. For more information, check out www.thepearlsd.com.
Since I wrote a little about fund-raisers this month, I felt it was appropriate to leave you with a quote about charity from the late and great actor and comedian Bob Hope:
“If you haven’t any charity in your heart, you have the worst kind of heart trouble.”
