35 Years of social change music: Holly Near, entertainer, teacher and activist, will speak and perform a concert, “An Intimate Evening with Holly Near,” at The Center at 7 p.m. Near’s career as a singer has been profoundly defined by an unwillingness to separate her passion for music from her passion for human dignity. The event featuring the skilled and immensely talented vocal performer and outspoken ambassador for peace will benefit the Women’s History Museum. Tickets range from $20-$50. Bob Saget: Yes, Bob Saget starred on two of the most family-friendly shows network television has ever produced, “Full House,” and “America’s Funniest Home Videos,” but he has also been an on-the-edge, out of his mind, standup comedian for more than 30 years. Saget has also starred in a number of hit movies, specials, and Broadway productions that have shown off “the other side” of his alter ego, “Full House” character Danny Tanner. The comedian will perform at 4th & B as part of his 2008 Tour. SWANK: Chiropractique celebrates its third year of excellence with SWANK, an elegant fund-raising evening at the Bamboo Lounge from 7-10 pm. All proceeds from the event will benefit Being Alive, which was established in 1989 as a public service agency whose mission is to provide support and resources to persons with HIV/AIDS. moRe sUper Art Events will display artwork from various local artists at the event. All art will be available for purchase. The evening will also include food and drink specials, prizes and a raffle. The suggested donation is $5-$10. Dress is semi-formal, elegant couture. Hillcrest Comedy: Stand-up comedy invades Hillcrest! Hillcrest Comedy, which spotlights local stand-up talent, holds a show inside the beautiful Bamboo Lounge on the second Sunday of every month. Different comedians who will keep the audience laughing all night long appear each month. Patrons have the option of drinking and dining at the venue. Symphony No. 2: Tchaikovsky’s early Little Russian symphony is chock full of patriotic Russian fervor, while his Andante Cantibile is awash in lyrical folk melody. The San Diego Symphony, conducted by Jahja Ling, will perform Symphony No. 2 at The Copley Symphony Hall. Principal Trombone Toby Oft will shine on a dazzling concerto by Grondahl. Out of Vogue: Located in the building that previously housed the popular lesbian bar Six Degrees, Starlite is one of the swankiest new joints in Middletown! Named 2007 Best New Restaurant in San Diego by CityBeat, Starlite includes dining, a full bar, live music and a hip atmosphere. Tuesday nights, called Out of Vogue, feature DJs Mario Orduno and Brandon Welchez. Tuesday’s events are free and meant to be fun. According to Starlite, “The records really are spectacular, as are the french fries.” Out of Vogue begins at 10 p.m. and there is no cover charge. Finest City Squares: San Diego’s Finest City Squares is a square dance club serving the GLBT community, although all dancers are encouraged to join. Wine Smarties Fund-raiser: Help make blood cancer a thing of the past! The Wine Smarties will lead participants through a hedonistic cheese and wine pairing designed to sharpen the senses and de-mystify the art of pairing. This fun, highly interactive social event has been designed for wine enthusiasts of all levels! Proceeds will go toward finding a cure for blood cancer. The event will be held from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at the Wine Smarties Headquarters at 644 Torrance St. in Mission Hills. Event cost is $45 per person.
