Interview
Artist profile: Joe Phillips
Published Thursday, 06-Mar-2008 in issue 1054
Joe Phillips was born in Atlanta, Ga. At an early age he could often be found sketching images into the ground with a stick. His mother quickly saw the artistic talent that her son had and began buying him more permanent sketchpads and pens to record his work, and these tools haven’t left his side since. He also began learning how to sew and construct his own toys out of tinfoil sheets, and later he became involved in costume design for the school theater. But things really broke for him when his brother Lex suggested that he try his hand at drawing comics. The fit was so natural that he quickly found himself on the path to becoming one of the best-known and diverse artists in the comic and graphic arts industries.
Contrary to rumors and speculation, Joe did not travel to France to study under esoteric European masters of animation and graphics to learn his craft. Truth be told, Joe was never formally trained as a graphic artist. His ability has always been innate, prodigious, and entirely self-developed. His unique flair and abundant creativity quickly gained him widespread recognition within comic book world, and in short time he found himself working on such major titles as Wonder Woman, Superman, JLA, Mr. Miracle, Superboy, and Silver Surfer (during the course of his career Joe has worked in some form or another on almost every major title that was in publication in the 80’s and 90’s). He also found time to develop his own projects, and was the creator and artist for the Heretic series with Dark Horse comics, as well as having regular comic strips featured in XY and Xodus USA magazines. His ability to complete enormous projects quickly and cleanly has made him a highly sought-out “pinch hitter” in the comic book industry, and he is often called in to finish out books or produce entire story lines at a moments notice (his completion of the comic book Rage in the award-winning Showtime series “Queer as Folk” is one of his most recent accomplishments)
More recently, Joe has been commissioning corporate advertisement artwork for such companies as TLA, Budweiser, Rodnick vodka, ID Lube, DeliMex (he designed Paquito Taquito), and Jocko Wear. He has produced material and cover work for such magazines as Circuit Noize, Gloss, The Advocate, Blue, Zipper, Instinct, Genre, Girlfriend, Inside Pride, Cyber Socket, Gay Web Monkey, and XY. He has also produced album art for several techno dance compilation CD’s, and is the sole artist for the latest edition of “The Joy of Gay Sex” by Harper Collins.
Joe has done a number of flash animation projects, most notably the tremendously successful GAYVN award-winning House of Morecock (which debuted the now infamous character Jonas Morecock) in comics through Bruno Gmunder. He has also received recognition for his flash animation short series Cumquest, which was a pornographic spoof on Star Trek.

Joe helped found and design the Web site for Xodus USA, a gay product company that features (among other things) his line of Joe Boy Dress-Up refrigerator magnets and Joe Boy printed T-shirts. He is becoming increasingly well known for his Joe Boy art books, and has three titles and several calendars already in print with more awaiting production. He has also published two graphic novel installments of his animation House of Morecock.
The legendary artist, director, writer, and animator Joe Phillips currently resides in San Diego, and is about to release his first and most highly anticipated full-feature animated adult film Stonewall and Riot. Looking back on his two decades of highly innovative and groundbreaking work, it’s a good bet to say that the world of animation and adult films will never be the same again.
