My trips in and out of the hospital have stopped and now it’s medical expert to expert. Thank you all for your concern. After I receive the results from some more blood work, I will know if I’m able to keep my New York commitment this weekend.
About those meth ads
Some television stations have recently been running an anti-meth ad campaign aimed at gay men. I find it interesting that many of the stations now running these ads have rejected positive GLBT advertisements in the past.
At any rate the anti-meth ads include a Latino who says he lost “his man” because of meth, as well as a young Caucasian boy who says that he ended up getting HIV while on meth because of unsafe sex.
I know that there is a big meth problem in the GLBT community, but meth is a major problem for all communities. Still, I don’t know why alongside the four gay guys, they could not have had two straight guys talking about losing their wives, or visitation rights with their children. While I think this anti-meth campaign is important, I do not believe the GLBT community should have been singled out. It should have targeted other high-risk communities, too.I say this as a person of color and a gay man.
Swastikas and hanging nooses in our schools
As chair of the San Diego Human Relations Commission, I have received more information about a growing number of incidents regarding nooses and Nazi swastikas appearing. There have been more than just a few cases like this, which is very disturbing. Just as the harassment and bullying of GLBT students should not be tolerated, these incidents and any displays of hate should be made top priority and fully investigated.
I remember when schools were safe. These days, there are guns, knives, gangs and shootings. We also need qualified members of the GLBT community, who believe that all children must be protected, to run for school board. We have elected judges, councilmembers, state assemblymembers and other public officials who are gay and lesbian. Now is the time to elect representatives from the GLBT community to the school board, as GLBT families are growing every day.
Easter egg hunt attended by 600 people
This past Sunday approximately 600 children and parents attended the sixth annual Children’s Easter Egg Hunt at Trolley Barn Park in University Heights. Among those who showed up to lend their support were City Attorney Mike Aguirre, The Center’s Dr. Delores Jacobs, City Council candidate Todd Gloria, the mayor’s daughter Lisa Sanders and her partner, president of the Imperial Court de San Diego board president “Big” Mike Phillips and Mr. San Diego Leather 2008 Sidney.
A special thank you to Sears, Mercy Hospital, the GSDBA, Merkley-Mitchell Mortuary, Lei Lounge and Bourbon Street, the Caliph, Redwing, Baja Betty’s, the Gay & Lesbian Times staff, the Stonewall Citizens’ Patrol, Commissioner Robert Gleason, Ben Dillingham, Kevin Tilden, and the leather community for all their support, as well as to those who donated red wagons, bicycles and hundreds of Easter baskets. Additionally thank you to the outstanding volunteers of The Center, Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, Imperial Court and of course Toni Puente and her Latin rhythm company.

“Big” Mike, Mike Kirby, Leslie Jordan, an old queen and Jim Ginelli
It was a total community effort and I’d also like to extend a big thank you to County Supervisor Ron Roberts and his office, who donated all the helmets for the bikes. But most of all, thank you to the hard-working co-chairs of the event, the empress and emperor of the Imperial Court, Boy Ron, Mr. Mike (Mr. San Diego Eagle) and Jackie-O for their special fund-raisers.
This event has continued to grow and this year went about $1,000 over budget. To help with these costs, further donations are still being accepted and are very much appreciated. To help out, send donations made payable to: Imperial Court, Inc. c/o P.O. Box 33915, San Diego, CA 92163.
A conversation with Lorena Sanchez
Recently I had a conversation with Lorena Sanchez, the hard working leader of the San Diego Labor Council. I’ve known this intelligent, articulate and very beautiful woman since her days as a top adviser to the lieutenant governor, and I supported her for her first City Council race. I believe that Sanchez, who is married to a highway patrol officer and who has a great family, has a great future ahead of her. She could one day end up being the city’s first mayor of color. Though we disagree on some issues and candidates, I respect her for giving a voice to those who would not otherwise have one – like the janitors and hotel workers throughout the city, just to name a few.
Dinner with Emmy Award- winner Leslie Jordan
The fabulous restaurant Ono Sushi was the right choice for having dinner with Emmy Award-winning actor Leslie Jordan, who is infamous for his character “Beverley Leslie” on “Will & Grace.” As always, it was a two-hour rollercoaster ride of hilarious stories and fun. Joining us were Jim Ginelli, who is now associated with The Center, businessperson and community leader Mike Kirby and “Big” Mike. Leslie and I traded stories about living in Hollywood and also dished about some local boys. HBO just spent $25 million on a show starring Leslie and Lily Tomlin, however we learned that it might not be aired. Leslie started his 30-city one-man show here in San Diego last weekend and it’s a huge hit and a must-see performance. Trust me when I say that what you see on stage is as real as what is off stage. I love you girlfriend!
Universal Nightclub makes San Diego Magazine cover
All of San Diego is waiting for the opening of Universal Nightclub Lounge, along with its accompanying restaurant Dish at Universal. Well the wait is almost over, as it is set to open in just a few weeks. Aside from that, this ultra-modern and state-of-the-art nightclub will be featured on the cover of the prestigious San Diego Magazine. Be sure to pick up your copy of the April issue and read about what I predict will soon be the No. 1 nightclub on the West Coast.
