Chicano Park Day: Our Lives, Culture, and History are Seen Through Our Murals! is the theme of the 38th Annual Chicano Park Day to be held in historic Chicano Park from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Visitors to Chicano Park Day will experience traditional music and dance, including a beautiful performance of Aztec Indigenous dance, coordinated by Toltecas en Aztlán. In addition, there will be a display of classic low-rider cars presented by Amigos Car Club and a children’s art workshop led by muralist Victor Ochoa. Food, arts and crafts vendors and informational booths will also be available. This family event is free and open to the public. UCSD Dance: The LGBTQI Association at University of California, San Diego invites the community to its first dance party of the semester from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. at the Porter’s Pub on campus. The event provides queer and ally identified students and friends a safe space to socialize and have fun. The dance includes music, snacks, and a pub serving food to all, and beer available to those 21 years and older. The dance is open to all ages. The theme is Taste the Rainbow and guests are encouraged to wear spring/rainbow colors. Free Skittles candy will be handed out. The UCSD campus is located off of Gilman Drive in La Jolla. EarthFair: Billed as the largest free environmental fair in the world, San Diego’s EarthFair 2008 will be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. in Balboa Park. This year will be the 19th anniversary of the annual event, which draws around 60,000 visitors. Produced entirely by volunteers, EarthFair will include more than 200 exhibitors, special theme areas, a food pavilion, a children’s activity area and five entertainment venues. EarthFair will also include a children’s earth parade and alternative fuel vehicle parade and show. Participants are encouraged to ride a bike or take public transportation to the event. Glow in the Dark Tour: Grammy award-winning Kanye West will rock the San Diego Sports Arena during the West Coast leg of his Glow in the Dark Tour. Kanye will be joined by Rihanna, N.E.R.D. and Lupe Fiasco for the show at 7 p.m. San Diego is the fourth stop on the tour, which will end in Washington, D.C. on May 10. Duo Birthday Benefit: The Imperial Court de San Diego’s Tauranean couple, Nathan Garcia and Nathan Grandbouche, invite the entire community to their duo birthday celebration from 5-9 p.m. The party, at the Bamboo Lounge, will be a benefit for the Benjamin F. Dillingham III Community Grant. A $20 minimum donation will include entertainment, an auction and raffle, and food. City Commissioner Nicole Murray-Ramirez will serve as the host for the evening. The Benjamin F. Dillingham III Community Grant was established in July 2000 and has awarded more than $75,000 in financial assistance to community members in need. Gentlemen’s Martini Night: Gentlemen’s Martini Night invites gay men and their friends twice a month to a new, exciting and upscale venue. A mandatory dress code is enforced and the group has a “proper behavior” policy to promote an image of social awareness and public acceptance. One of the goals of the event is to erase perceived negative stereotypes of the gay community. It also allows gay and gay friendly people to mix and mingle in an environment that is conducive to developing camaraderie. Sight and Sound: The free monthly extravaganza, Sight and Sound: Arts & Entertainment Calendar, will make its way to Hillcrest for a diverse, thrilling performance showcase to be held at the Bamboo Lounge. From 6:30-11 p.m. guests will be able to check out five exhibition booths and three live performances featuring representatives from upcoming events such as the Roots Festival, Little Italy’s annual Art Walk and other local events. The cozy atmosphere of Bamboo Lounge will also allow guests to enjoy wine and food and socialize with performers and other guests. The event is open to all ages. Dining Out for Life: Dining Out for Life is an international fund-raising event for HIV/AIDS service organizations. In exchange for pledging 25-100 percent of the day’s food and liquor sales, restaurants receive promotional materials and are listed in a citywide marketing and advertising campaign in an effort to increase customer traffic. The funds raised will benefit The Center’s HIV/AIDS services and prevention programs. Sixty-two restaurants and bars in San Diego County are participating in Dining Out for Life. North Park Farmers Market: The North Park Famers Market is open every Thursday from 3 p.m. until sunset. Visitors can browse from a wide selection of fruits, vegetables, nuts, flowers and other items. The farmers market is a great place to stock up on low priced, fresh items for the upcoming week. Also, a number of promotional booths are available to provide information about local businesses and services. Musicians are usually on hand to entertain shoppers.
