Imperial Court donates $5K at Transgender Day of Empowerment to support transgender services
Representatives of the Imperial Court de San Diego presented a check for $5,000 to Family Health Centers of San Diego’s Project STAR (Supporting Transgender Access to Resources) Program at the fifth annual Transgender Day of Empowerment event on April 4.
Imperial Court president Big Mike Phillips, along with Emperor Daddy Don and Empress Chantal, made the presentation to Tracie Jada O’Brien, program coordinator of Project STAR, at the event, which celebrated the city’s diverse transgender community.
“One of the primary goals of the Imperial Court is to raise funds and raise awareness for critical services in our community,” Phillips said. “The work that Family Health Centers of San Diego has done to establish Project STAR is amazing. We want to ensure that the program continues to serve our transgender brothers and sisters.”
Phillips noted that such donations are crucial to the STAR program, which provides a safe and supportive environment for transgender individuals looking for employment assistance, counseling referrals, access to transitioning related medical services, and community support.
Family Health Centers of San Diego developed Project STAR to help transgender persons access health and other resources while educating about and advocating for the needs of San Diego’s transgender population. Through education and advocacy workshops, Project STAR has worked to increase healthcare providers’ and GLBT organizations’ transgender-specific cultural competency.
“[The Imperial Court] hope’s that other organizations and individuals in the community will join us in our support,” Phillips said.
