Encinitas Garden Festival: The Encinitas Garden Festival is an all-day celebration of community, gardening and the horticultural heritage of Encinitas. This year’s event continues a tradition that started in May 2005 when more than 30 residents of downtown Encinitas opened their gardens for a sell-out event. In April 2006, 1,200 people toured more than 20 gardens in north Leucadia. The 2008 Garden Festival kicks off at the parking lot of Mira Costa College’s San Elijo Campus in Cardiff. Tour participants will board double-decker buses and tour many of the gardens and marketplaces of North County. Juanes: In the wake of the crossover mania that characterized the Latin music industry at the end of the 1990s (Ricky Martin, Shakira, Paulina Rubio, Thalía) came Juanes, a Latin artist who didn’t calculate crossover approaches to attain international recognition – he writes, sings and plays his own songs in his own language. Juanes will stop at the San Diego Sports Arena as part of his La Vida … Es Un Ratico tour for an 8 p.m. show. Tickets range from $39.50-$89.50 and are available through Ticketmaster. Cinco de Mayo Fiesta: The Centro Cultural de la Raza is throwing a Cinco de Mayo Fiesta on Sunday, May 4. The event will feature the Chingazo Review with San Diego’s Chicano legends Quino, Chunky and Agua Dulce. There will also be a performance by the Ballet Folkorico. Participants will be able to enjoy food, libations, dance and celebration. The fiesta begins at 6 p.m. Admission is $10. Free Organ Concert: A cultural gem lies in San Diego’s “big backyard.” The Spreckels Organ Pavilion at Balboa Park is home to the largest outdoor organ in the world and concerts are free every Sunday of the year. This week’s concert will feature San Diego’s Civic Organist, Carol Williams, performing a special 2 p.m. concert titled Jane Austin Comes to the Spreckels Organ. Concerts are sponsored by the City of San Diego Park and Recreation Department and the Spreckels Organ Society. Donations are welcome. Downtown Escondido Fashion Week: The Downtown Business Association of Escondido will host the first annual Downtown Escondido Fashion Week, presented by Mercedes Benz of Escondido. Ricky Lizalde of “Project Runway,” Evening Wear and Bridals by Susanti, and sportswear by Miriam J will showcase their latest fashions. Attendees will also see runway shows that include local hair designers, make-up artists, downtown Escondido clothing boutiques, home accessory stores and more. The week-long event, which runs through May 10, will also feature a Fashion Week Launch Party, tea with Ricky Lizalde, trunk shows, activities and more.

Gentlemen’s Martini Night: Gentlemen’s Martini Night invites gay men and their friends twice a month to a new, exciting and upscale venue. A mandatory dress code is enforced and the group has a “proper behavior” policy to promote an image of social awareness and public acceptance. One of the goals of the event is to erase perceived negative stereotypes of the gay community. It also allows gay and gay- friendly people to mix and mingle in an environment that is conducive to developing camaraderie. Jazz in the Park: Swinging Bay Area jazz guitarist Mimi Fox makes her San Diego debut this month at The San Diego Museum of Art’s Jazz in the Park series. Fox will share the concert with the venerable Mundell Lowe, one of the living legends of jazz guitar. Each will perform a set with Los Angeles bassist Darek Oles and drummer Steve Barnes and end the concert by performing together. Tickets for the 5:30 p.m. concert are $18 for museum members, $22 for non-members and $10 for students. The concert will be held in the James S. Copley Auditorium at the San Diego Museum of Art, located at1450 El Prado in Balboa Park. www.sdmart.org

Guys, Games and Grub: Guys, Games & Grub is a fun, free social activity for men at The Center. The evening includes board games, card games, food and fun. Alicia Keys: Alicia Keys has been writing songs since she was 14 years old, with seven years of piano lessons under her belt by that time. In later years, she appeared on movie soundtracks, including Shaft and Men in Black. In 1998, she signed a deal with Arista Records when the company triumphed in a bidding war over other labels. Her 2001 major-label debut, Songs in A Minor, hit No. 1, went multi-platinum and was followed in 2003 by another chart-topper, The Diary of Alicia Keys, which became a Grammy winner. As part of her As I Am tour, Keys will stop at the San Diego Sports Arena for a 7:30 p.m. show. Tickets range from $39.50-$100 and are available through Ticketmaster. North Park Farmers Market: The North Park Famers Market is open every Thursday until sunset. Visitors can browse from a wide selection of fruits, vegetables, nuts, flowers and other items. The farmers market is a great place to stock up on low priced, fresh items for the upcoming week. Also, a number of promotional booths are available to provide information about local businesses and services. Musicians are usually on hand to entertain shoppers.
