Margaret Cho: Margaret Cho is one of the most prolific and critically acclaimed comedians of our time. In the past eight years she’s launched four sold-out national tours, turning each into a concert film. Cho will be in San Diego May 16-17 as part of her current “Beautiful” tour. Liam Sullivan and Kelly will be special guests at the show which will be held at Viejas Concerts in the Park. A portion of the proceeds from the concert will be donated to San Diego LGBT Pride. Parents Night Out: Family Matters invites parents for an evening to get away, relax, and enjoy “some much needed adult time” at Baja Betty’s. Fern Street Circus: The Fern Street Circus, San Diego’s own circus, will present its 18th annual original show in a classic open-air ring in Balboa Park. Fern Street’s “The Mayor’s Feelin’ Good Campaign”’ will have audience members rallying around The Mayor of Fern Street as she faces her first real opponent, Mr. Moneybags. With two wily political advisors, Moneybags could win the campaign and become the Mayor of Fern Street. Attendees will experience zany antics, madcap fun and breathtaking circus skills in a campaign extravaganza like no other. Tickets are $7 for children aged 2-12 and $14 for adults. The Art of Generosity: The San Diego Human Dignity Foundation’s (SDHDF) annual gala, The Art of Generosity, will be held at the Westin Horton Plaza at 6 p.m. with San Diego Fire Chief Tracy Jarman serving as the honorary chair of the event. Gala participants will travel from studio to gallery to museum, and have the opportunity to enjoy cocktails, a full dinner and live entertainment, as well as a photo exhibit of grantees. They will also have the chance to learn more about the SDHDF and the nonprofit organizations it supports. Ticket prices range from $150 for “Generous Art Lover” tickets, to $300 for “Very Generous Art Lover Tickets,” which include additional VIP benefits. Brothers United: Brothers United, a group for black gay, bisexual and questioning men, will host a mixer at the Bamboo Lounge. Community members are invited for a day of friends, food and empowerment from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Lunch will be provided and all attendees will receive two free AMC movie tickets. Hillcrest Farmers Market: Consistently voted the best of San Diego’s many farmers markets, this popular community gathering was created in 1997 by the Hillcrest Business Association and is part of the California Federation of Certified Farmers Markets. Shoppers have the opportunity to purchase from a wide selection of fresh fruits, baked goods, crafts, plants, and other items. The market takes place every Sunday at the San Diego DMV’s parking lot, rain or shine, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The San Diego DMV is located on Lincoln Avenue between Cleveland and Normal Streets. www.hillquest.com

San Diego County Cemeteries: As part of its Meet the Masters series, The San Diego Museum of Art will present a special lecture titled “The Art and Mystery of San Diego County Cemeteries.” Dr. Seth Mallios, chair of the San Diego State University Anthropology Department and director of the San Diego Gravestone Project, will discuss artistic trends and anomalies in mortuary symbolism at local cemeteries. The lecture will begin at 6 p.m. in the museum’s James S. Copley Auditorium. Admission is $12 for museum members, $15 for non-members and $7 for students. 2008 Nicky Awards: Referred to as “San Diego gay Oscars,” the 2008 Nicky Awards will be held in the Birch North Park Theatre. The Nicky Awards is California’s oldest GLBT awards program, honoring outstanding achievement in the community. This year’s program will include a dinner at 5:30 p.m. and the awards show will begin at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $150 for VIP Dinner and Ceremony; $85 for VIP; and $45 for general admission. Audre Lorde Poetry Mixer: “When I dare to be powerful – to use my strength in the service of my vision, then it becomes less and less important whether I am afraid,” Audre Lorde wrote. The Center’s Women’s Resource Center invites the community to an evening of music, poetry and inspiration honoring the vision of Audre Lorde. All spoken word artists and musicians are welcome to perform. Everyone is welcome to attend the event which begins at 6 p.m. at The Center. Free event. Indian Film Festival: The San Diego Museum of Art (SDMA) and the Museum of Photographic Arts (MoPA) will present a film festival in conjunction with the Rhythms of India: The Art of Nandalal Bose (1882–1966) exhibit at SDMA and Humanitas: Images of India by Fredric Roberts exhibit at MoPA. This month’s film is titled “The River” (1951) and is a lyrical and heartwarming film that tells the story of three teenage girls growing up in Bengal, India, near a large river, as each one develops a crush on a one-legged American vet. Showtime is 7 p.m. Tickets are $7 for members; $10 for non-members; and $8 for students, which includes admission to both museums through June 1. The film will be shown at MoPA’s Joan & Irwin Jacobs Theatre located at 1649 El Prado in Balboa Park. www.sdmart.org

Corpus Christi: Diversionary Theatre is currently playing the 1998 Terrence McNally play Corpus Christi as the sixth and final show of its 2007-2008 season. Named one of the best plays of the year by Time magazine in 1998, this vivid and moving passion play is a contemporary telling of the life of Jesus as if he were a gay man and grew up in 1950s Texas. Tickets range from $29-$33 with discounts available for students, military, seniors and groups. Various show-times. Corpus Christi runs through June 1.
