NAACP holds annual Freedom Fund Dinner
Event raises funds for San Diego chapter
Published Thursday, 23-Oct-2003 in issue 826
The San Diego branch of the NAACP is holding their annual Freedom Fund dinner, “Having Our Say,” Thursday, Oct. 30, at 5:30 p.m. at the Marriott Hotel in Mission Valley. Attorney William McCurine, Jr. is the keynote speaker. McCurine is one of the first African-American attorneys to become a partner in a major San Diego law firm, and is known for working behind the scenes to promote equality and justice on behalf of all San Diegans, particularly African-Americans.
The NAACP Freedom Fund dinner began as the major annual fundraising event for the organization and as an opportunity to recognize San Diegans who have advocated for the rights of African-American entrepreneurs, educators, voters and citizens.
Dr. Pat Washington, education chair for the San Diego Branch of the NAACP, has collaborated with “We the People” Democratic Club and the San Diego Democratic Club to bring members of the San Diego GLBT political and activist communities together at this year’s event.
“The celebration is an opportunity to conduct more extensive outreach to heretofore underserved members of the civil rights and African-American community — the African-American GLBT community,” said Washington.
