Pecs celebrates 15 years
Neighborhood bar is a local favorite
Published Thursday, 23-Oct-2003 in issue 826
It was 15 years ago that Pecs moved from its original home (where Bourbon Street is now) to its current location at 2046 University Ave. This week they will be celebrating the anniversary with prices rolled back to the ’80s throughout the week.
“We’ve had a wonderful increase in business and success,” Robin Luck, who has been working at the bar for over seven years, told the Gay and Lesbian Times. “We try to stay in the middle of it all and we try to attract bears, the leather community and people across the board.”
Among the recent changes at the bar was the addition of a new patio with a full service bar that opened this summer.
“We’ve just gone through some changes with the addition of the patio and will soon do a face lift on the outside,” Pecs owner Ted Buetner said.
Weekly specials include free pizza on Sundays. Monday nights are all about football with the game on the big screens and on Tuesdays and Wednesdays the bar has leather and bear chest drink specials.
The bar is also getting more involved in San Diego’s sports community, sponsoring teams in softball, basketball, billiards and darts.
“Most of the people who work there have been there for at least 10 years … People that were involved in the bar were involved with outside sports and it made sense to support them and help them out,” Buetner said. “We also just had a pretty successful fundraiser for Special Delivery and we do things for Mama’s Kitchen also on occasion.”
Celebrate the 15th anniversary with Pecs all next week. The celebration will be capped off with a night of “Tricks and Treats” as they judge their annual Pumpkin Carving contest on Friday, Oct. 31.
