Ferron: Folk legend Ferron will perform an 8 p.m. show at The Avo Playhouse in support of her 14th musical effort, Boulder. The album features gay favorites Ani DiFranco and The Indigo Girls. Rolling Stone hailed Ferron as a “culture hero.” Joining Ferron on stage will be New York-based indie rocker, Bitch, who produced Boulder, infusing the folk singer’s work with a fresh, new sound. Out at the Park: Celebrate Pride with the San Diego Padres at Out at the Park. This evening is an opportunity for the community to celebrate San Diego LGBT Pride while enjoying a night of fun, baseball,and recognition for volunteers, friends and allies of the San Diego GLBT community. The GALA Choruses of San Diego will sing the National Anthem at the 7:05 p.m. game to be held at Petco Park. Also, a special tailgate party will be held prior to the game at Stingaree from 4 - 6:30 p.m. Celebrate Out at the Park before the game at this special party which will include drinks and appetizers. Tickets for the game are $19 or $40 and can be purchased online at sandiego.padres.mlb.com/sd/ticketing/groups/pride_night.jsp. The Most Fabulous Story Ever Told: The First Unitarian Universalist Church and Looking Glass Theatre will present Paul Rudnick’s The Most Fabulous Story Ever Told, directed by Geoffrey Cox. This hilarious exploration of the Bible and religion from a gay perspective follows Adam and Steve, as well as their lesbian counterparts Jane and Mabel, from the Garden of Eden through the First Brunch and on into the present day. On the way, the comedy makes room for serious questions about faith and meaning in an uncertain world, questions that speak to people from all walks of life. The second act finds these same characters stripped of their Biblical history living in New York dealing with issues of same-sex marriage, parenting, AIDS, and once again, faith in an uncertain world. The show is an official event of San Diego LGBT Pride and will be presented July 11 and 12 at 8 p.m. at the First Unitarian Universalist Church located at 4190 Front St. in Hillcrest. Perfectly Pink: San Diego Pix will present a fabulous afternoon of fashion, food, cocktails and friends at Lei Lounge. Perfectly Pink will be headlined with a live performance by international recording artist Kristine W. A hosted p.i.n.k. Vodka bar will be available from noon to 1 p.m., and the event will also include a fashion show hosted by Jonathan Hale of San Diego Pix. Hillcrest Hop in the Hood: The publishers of the popular Hillcrest neighborhood guide, HillQuest, and its companion Web site, HillQuest.com, will celebrate the completion of the sixth edition of the guide by hosting the sixth annual Hop in the Hood from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Publishers Ann Garwood and Nancy Moors invite the community to stop by and enjoy live music, entertainment and a giant cake. Also, the annual Flower Power Parade will take place as participants pass down the street with their decorated bikes, wagons and other non-motorized vehicles. Hillcrest Comedy: Stand-up comedy invades Hillcrest! Hillcrest Comedy, which spotlights local stand-up talent, holds a show inside the beautiful Bamboo Lounge on the second Sunday of every month with different comedians appearing each time. Miss Gay Universe San Diego: Urban Mo’s Bar & Grill will be hosting the seventh annual Miss Gay Universe San Diego Pageant at 10 p.m. The event, to be emceed by Malva and Ricardo, will include Spanish translations for audience members. Mo’s is expecting a very large crowd to witness the exciting lineup of performers who are vying for this coveted crown. The contest is open to anyone over the age of 21 and advance sign-ups are required. Contestants will be judged in three categories: swimsuit, evening gown and costume from the country they represent. Journey and Heart: Legendary rock band Journey, known for its early 1980s hit “Don’t Stop Believing,” will be joined by Heart at the Cricket Wireless Amphitheater. Heart is well known for its hit “Alone.” The show will be opened by Cheap Trick. ‘Phantom of the Opera’: Andrew Lloyd Webber’s international award-winning phenomenon Phantom of the Opera, directed by Harold Prince, has woven its magical spell over standing room audiences in more than 100 cities worldwide. The show is celebrating its’ 15th anniversary on tour and will stop in San Diego from July 16 to Aug. 10. The show will be performed at the San Diego Civic Theatre. Ticket prices and show times vary. GSDBA Pride Mixer: The Greater San Diego Business Association (GSDBA) will host its annual Pride Mixer from 5:30 - 8 p.m. at Hawthorn’s Restaurant Lounge. The GSDBA, also referred to as San Diego’s Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce, is a nonprofit organization dedicated to building strength and prosperity in the lesbian and gay community through networking and social activities. The Pride Mixer will include live entertainment, giveaways and other surprises. Hors d’oeuvres will be provided by Hawthorn’s, Bite, British Food Gourmet, Urban Mo’s, Baja Betty’s and Ono Sushi. Independence Day Fireworks: Fireworks will light up the sky across San Diego County in celebration of the 232nd birthday of the United States of America. While there are a number of “hot spots” across the county to view the various displays, one of the biggest will be the eighth annual Big Bay Fireworks Show, benefiting the San Diego Armed Services YMCA. The show lasts approximately 20 minutes, beginning at 9 p.m., as fireworks explode from multiple barges off of Harbor Island, Shelter Island, the Embarcadero, Seaport Village and Coronado Landings. Seaport Village is one of the best viewing locations, but many longtime San Diegans may fill you on some of the lesser-known prime viewing spots. The show will be simulcast live on KYXY FM 96.5 radio. More information about the Big Bay Fireworks Show is available online at www.thebigbay.com.
