Human Rights Vigil: To kick off Pride weekend, San Diego LGBT Pride will hold a Human Rights Vigil and Rally on the Main Stage at the San Diego Pride Festival site from 6:30-7:45 p.m. The goal of the event is to educate the San Diego community on human rights abuses of GLBT people locally and globally, and to inspire community members to action. London-based Peter Tatchell, a global activist for social justice and GLBT equality, will be the featured speaker. Community activists from San Diego will also speak to give a local perspective and singer-guitarist Allen Singer will perform traditional folk music. This powerful event is free and open to the public. The San Diego LGBT Pride Festival site is located on Juniper Street at Sixth Avenue. www.sdpride.org

34th Annual Pride Parade: When San Diego’s first Pride march took place in 1974 down Broadway, its participants could not have imagined traversing down a mile-long parade route lined with 150,000 cheering spectators. The brave activists who marched in the first parade recall the fear of losing their jobs or being ostracized in a climate of fear and hatred. Today, the San Diego LGBT Pride parade is one of the largest, most colorful events in the region. More than 175 contingents, floats and marching groups make up the parade, which has become one of the most anticipated events of the year. This year’s event will have 11 reviewing stands along the route, including a Deaf Pride stand with ASL interpretation, and a senior cool zone. The event, which begins at 11 a.m., is free and open to the public. Parking is tight, and community members are encouraged to use the free shuttle service provided by Pride. The parade travels down University Avenue from Normal Street to Sixth Avenue at Upas Street. www.sdpride.org

Hillcrest Cleanup: Instead of spending the morning after Pride in bed nursing a hangover, get up early and give back to the community that hosted the 200,000-plus revelers the day before. The Hillcrest Town Council will host a special post-Pride community cleanup at 7 a.m. Participants will be provided with brooms, bags, gloves and other materials and will be sent off in teams to make Hillcrest shine! San Diego LGBT Pride will donate $10 to the Hillcrest Town Council for every volunteer hour. This will be the first fund-raiser for the Hillcrest Town Council.
