Pride parade lineup and route
Published Thursday, 17-Jul-2008 in issue 1073
The 34th annual San Diego LGBT Pride parade will begin at 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 19. The parade route begins at Normal Street and University Avenue and runs along University Avenue to Sixth Avenue, ending at Ivy Lane.
# Contingent Listing
1 Special Tribute to GLBT Human Rights: March for Those Who Can’t – In 2008, no less than 86 member states of the United Nations still criminalize consensual same sex acts among adults, thus institutionally promoting a culture of hatred. Among those, seven have legal provisions with death penalty as punishment. Additionally, six provinces or territorial units also punish homosexuality with imprisonment.
San Diego LGBTPride hopes to raise awareness about this reality which is unknown to the vast majority of people through the “March For Those Who Can’t.” The march is a tribute to our brothers and sisters around the world who are forced into invisibility or into denying who they truly are because they live in a culture where hatred and violence are justified by the state.
San Diego Pride has invited members of San Diego’s diverse ethnic and cultural GLBT communities to march with banners and flags of their mother countries where gays and lesbians are persecuted like Poland, Russia, Zimbabwe, and Iran.
Each person will march for a country in which same-sex rights are particularly endangered, where a culture of homophobia, lesbophobia and transphobia is reinforced.
