4 O’Clock Fridays: Start off the weekend with a twilight horse race followed by a concert featuring one of the hottest bands in the country at 4 O’ Clock Fridays. The Del Mar Racetrack will feature San Diego-based band Pinback at the concert, which is free with paid racetrack admission. Pinback is comprised of two core members, the prolific Armistead Burwell Smith IV (Zach) and the inexhaustible Rob Crow. The band has blossomed since its inception in 1998. Welcome Home: The Gay Men’s Chorus of San Diego (GMCSD) will present its annual summer concert on Aug. 2 and Aug. 3 at Christ Lutheran Church. This year’s concert, titled “Welcome Home,” will feature the San Diego Women’s Chorus as special guests. GMCSD’s new ensemble, Swell!, will also perform. General admission tickets are $20 for either show, with discounts available for seniors, students, and military. Men @ The Center: The next Men @ The Center Pool Party will be from 1-5 p.m. at the beautiful Mission Hills home of Robert Hibbard. Cohosted by The San Diego LGBT Community Center and Gentlemen’s Martini Night, the fun event will raise funds for The Center’s programs and services. Men are reminded to bring their bathing suits and get ready for a great afternoon of swimming and music, as DJ Steven Oliveri spins. Tickets are $25. NXNP: The North by North Park (NXNP) Music Conference is a one-day music event where participants will learn about the music business during panel discussions, workshops and demo review sessions starting at 10 a.m. NXNP will feature speakers who have been involved in local, regional, and national music. Following the workshops, NXNP will showcase more than 100 musical acts from Southern California in 14 venues. The NXNP Music Fest will run from 7 p.m. to 1:30 a.m. featuring popular local musicians such as Lauren DeRose & The Kates, Anna Troy Band, and DJ Edgartronic. All proceeds from NXNP will be donated to the San Diego Music Foundation, a nonprofit organization that focuses its efforts on local musician assistance, music education, professional development, live performance and the annual San Diego Music Awards show recognizing creative achievement in the San Diego music community. Hollywood Marches: Matthew Garbutt will conduct the San Diego Symphony in a program of “Hollywood Marches” in Balboa Park. The music will include the “Superman March,” selections from The Music Man, “Olympic Fanfare,” “Parade of the Charioteers” from Ben Hur, “The Great Escape March,” “Star Trek” and “Raiders of the Lost Ark March.” The concert, which begins at 5:30 p.m., is free and will take place the Spreckels Organ Pavilion in Balboa Park. Free Museums: One of the great things about living in San Diego is Tuesdays in Balboa Park! Every Tuesday, many of the museums in the park offer free admission on a rotating schedule. Park guests have the opportunity to see all of the wonderful gems that lie inside these amazing cultural institutions without having to pay the admission charge. Museums free on the first Tuesday of each month include the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center, and Centro Cultural de la Raza. The Timken Museum of Art is always free! Guys, Game, & Grub: Each month, more than 100 men gather at The Center to play board and card games, make new friends and enjoy pizza, beer and soft drinks from 6:30-9:30 p.m. Guys, Games & Grub is a free event open to all men 21 years and older, with guys from all age groups well represented. The event gets bigger and better each month, and August’s Guys, Games & Grab will be a great way to relax, and hang out with new and old friends after the Pride season madness has passed. Little Miss Sunshine: The second annual Hillcrest rooftop movie screening will take place at dusk atop Whole Foods Market. The featured film, Little Miss Sunshine, was selected by a poll held on www.hillquest.com. The Uptown Sunrise Rotary Club is presenting the film along with Whole Foods Market and the Hillcrest History Guild. Everyone is invited to the free event. Folding chairs and blankets are encouraged. The viewing area will open at 6 p.m. and some snacks will be available. Pizza and BBQ items will be available for purchase. ‘Star Trek’: The Exhibition: Opening for a limited engagement at the San Diego Air and Space Museum in Balboa Park, “Star Trek: The Exhibition” is a 12,500 square foot touring exhibition containing the world’s most comprehensive collection of authentic “Star Trek” ships, re-creations, sets, costumes and props from five TV series and ten films over the last 40-plus years.
