Californians Against Hate kicked off its second campaign in the ongoing effort to educate voters about who’s funding Proposition 8, the November ballot initiative that would ban same-sex marriage.

Supporters of same-sex marriage began their “Call Terry Caster” campaign Tuesday, asking community members to call Terry Caster, owner of A-1 Self Storage Company of San Diego, who, along with his family, have contributed nearly $300,000 to qualifying the ballot measure and funding Yes on Proposition 8.

“We are curious as to why Mr. Caster saw fit to contribute so much money to this campaign of fear and hate. To find out, we are asking our millions of friends and supporters all over the United States to help us by calling Terry Caster and asking him why he and his family are so strongly against marriage equality,” said Fred Karger, campaign manager of Californians Against Hate.

A-1 Self Storage has 40 locations throughout California with more than four million storage units. Members of the Caster family are San Diego County’s largest contributors to passing the proposition. San Diego County residents donated 35 percent of the money to qualify Proposition 8 for the Nov. 4 ballot.

“This guy must really not like same-sex marriage,” Karger said. “Mr. Caster and many of his eight sons and daughters and their spouses have given a combined total of $293,000 to the Protect Marriage campaign between January and July of 2008. So, effective today, we are asking our millions of friends and supporters all over the United States to help us by calling Terry Caster and asking him why he and his family are so strongly against marriage equality.”

Caster’s assistant Nadine Roberts was handling his phone messages Tuesday.

A call to Caster on Wednesday indicated Caster set up a special voicemail to field the calls generated by the campaign.

Meanwhile, millions of dollars in out-of-state money is flooding the ballot-proposition campaign to ban same-sex marriage in California.

Supporters of the ban have taken in more than $1.2 million from out-of-state contributors.

In opposition, gay and lesbian rights groups around the country put more than $1.3 million into the fight against the ballot initiative.

That figure was before Bruce Bastian – a co-founder of the WordPerfect software company – opened his checkbook and donated $1 million.

Bastian grew up in a conservative Mormon family in Twin Falls, Idaho. He went on a mission for the church and received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Brigham Young University. But he has been at odds with the church’s view on homosexuality since coming out as a gay man.

Bastian, who lives in Orem, Utah, says he felt he had to level the financial playing field.

Last week, Attorney General Jerry Brown’s office changed Proposition 8’s ballot title and summary to say the measure seeks to “eliminate the right of same-sex couples to marry.”

Project Marriage coalition spokeswoman Jennifer Kerns called the new language inherently argumentative, and said it would prejudice voters against the initiative.

Her group intends to file a lawsuit to get the language changed back on Monday.
