Rob Benzon Foundation raises 15 K to benefit community
The Rob Benzon Foundation held its annual Pride fundraiser on Friday, July 18. The event hosted at the home of Mike Weiss, owner of Bourbon Street raised more than $15,000 to benefit various causes within the San Diego GLBT community.
2008 Wall of Honor inductees announced
The San Diego LGBT Community Center and the Imperial Court de San Diego (ICDSD) have announced the 2008 inductees into the San Diego LGBT Community Wall of Honor. Located in the auditorium of The Center, the Wall was created in 2004 by Nicole Murray-Ramirez, ICDSD, and The Center to recognize and celebrate those San Diego GLBT community members and allies who have had a significant positive impact upon the community. The Wall of Honor serves as a visible and lasting way to remind the community of those whose efforts have brought the community to where it is today.
The 2008 inductees are: Fred Acheson, Larry Baza, Dr. Michael Clark, Phyllis Jackson, George Murphy, and Frank Stiriti.
A ceremony will be held on Friday, August 15 from 6-8 p.m. The public is invited, and business casual attire is requested. RSVPs should be sent to Terry Bishop by August 8 at tbishop@thecentersd.org or 619-692-2077 ext. 209.

Celebrate San Diego LBT women at Women’s Fest
The Center’s Women’s Resource Center invites the community to The Center on Saturday, August 9 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. for San Diego Women’s Fest, a day-long festival of workshops, entertainment and resources for lesbian, bisexual and transgender women.
Scheduled events for the day include a light breakfast, workshops, a panel discussion, vendor booths, lunch and entertainment. Workshops will also be offered in Spanish. The day will end with Four Real: A Women’s Mixer, and music from DJ Sandra Ware.
The event is free, except for lunch, which will be available for $5.

SDWC’s fall season kicks off Aug. 24
The San Diego Women’s Chorus (SDWC) invites women of all ages, ethnicities, sexual orientations and skill levels to come and sing with the group this fall. Those who are not interested in singing can also be a part of the SDWC by joining the group’s production team. SDWC has begun to put together the 2008-2009 season and is looking for new members and volunteers to be a part of the season.
The first rehearsal of the group’s fall season will be held Sunday, Aug. 24 at 4 p.m. at the University Christian Church. Interested singers should visit the group’s website to check-out the membership requirements and then e-mail info@sdwc.org to express interest.

‘Life is a Banquet’ senior resource fair to be held
“Life is a Banquet,” the third annual Senior Resource Fair, will be held Saturday, Aug. 23 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at The Center. The free event is targeted toward GLBT seniors and will feature workshops, provider tables, an art exhibition, and live entertainment by Chris Schneider, In aChord, and The Sue Palmer Trio.

Nicole Murray-Ramirez scholarship fund taking applications
The Nicole Murray-Ramirez LGBT Scholarship Fund, a program of the Imperial Court de San Diego administered by The Center, will accept applications beginning August 1, 2008. Applications are available on The Center’s Web site at www.thecentersd.org and must be received with all accompanying documentation by Aug. 31, 2008, at 5 p.m.
Founded in 1979, the Fund has awarded scholarships to deserving LGBT students who have gone on to become professionals and community leaders. It is the mission of the fund to support and encourage GLBT students to further their education and become responsible and active members of the GLBT community.
GLBT students of vocational/technical schools, community colleges, four-year colleges and graduate schools are eligible and urged to apply. To fill out the online application, students without computers can use The Center’s David Bohnett Cyber Center, which provides free computer access Monday through Friday 9:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m.

Camping trip being organized to benefit The Center
The Center is organizing a men’s camping trip as a benefit for the organization. The trip, being called “The Grand Escape,” will take place along the Havasu River in the Grand Canyon.
Participants will have the opportunity to visit breathtaking waterfalls, swim in natural travertine pools, explore the canyon, and enjoy the camaraderie of men from San Diego. The trip will be a primitive camping experience, as participants will camp under the stars and not stay in hotels or luxury resorts.

North County LGBT Coalition Force to present Pride @ the Beach
The newly formed North County LGBT Coalition Force is working to organize the first annual Coming Out Day Pride @ the Beach event. The event is being organized for National Coming Out Day, Saturday, Oct. 11, from 3-7 p.m. at the Oceanside Beach Recreation Center.
The aim of the event is to increase visibility of GLBT people in San Diego’s North County communities and to celebrate the diversity of the area. Organizers are inviting participants to come out to the event to celebrate their pride and stand up against all forms of discrimination, while enjoying a family-friendly event with games, music, food and vendors on the beach.
The North County LGBT Coalition Force meets on the first and third Wednesday of each month at 6:30 p.m. at the Hill Street Café, located at 524 S. Coast Hwy. Those interested in getting involved with the coalition or wanting to help organize the event are encouraged to attend.

South Bay Pride scheduled for Aug. 24
The South Bay Alliance will present South Bay Pride on Sunday, Aug. 24, from 1-5 p.m. in Chula Vista’s Memorial Park. The purpose of the event is to provide visibility to the GLBT community living in San Diego’s South Bay communities and to provide residents an opportunity to spend a day together celebrating their pride.
According to the South Bay Alliance’s Web site, a 2005 American Community Survey conducted for the San Diego metropolitan area found that at least 17,000 GLBT residents reside in the South Bay area.
The day will include vendors, information tables, food, and live entertainment by Latin Rhythm Creations, Roxy Blue and Rhythm and the Method.
