Picture this: It’s hot out. So hot out that your clothes are soaked in sweat, you can feel the soles of your shoes melting into the sidewalk, and there’s not an A/C unit in sight. What’s any respectable boy or girl to do?
Participate in some water sports.
Yes, water sports. The kind that involves swimming. In a pool. What kind of water sports are you thinking of?
Anyway, since most of the people I know have been on the lookout for that ultimate summer accessory, I thought it would be a great idea to find the accessible pools in the city.
So if you know someone with a pool, give them my number. If you don’t, then still give them my number (as long as they are cute) and find some time on a hot summer day to lounge by and cool off at one of the following pools and participate in some water sports of your own!
Handlery Hotel and Resort
Every Sunday from noon to 5 p.m. (at least through August), lay poolside at the Handlery Hotel and listen to the vocal styling of Lady Dottie & the Diamonds, a well-known fixture in the San Diego music community and winner of two 2007 San Diego Music Awards for “Best Blues” and “Best Blues Album.” They are a band you don’t want to miss. Admission is $5.
If you can’t see Dottie & the Diamonds on Sundays, you can also see them almost every night of the week, like Monday nights at the Tower Bar on University Avenue and Wednesday nights at Henry’s Pub in the Gaslamp. For a preview of their music, check out www.myspace.com/ladydottieandthediamonds.
The Handlery Hotel and Resort is located on 950 Hotel Circle North. For more information, call 619-298-0511 or visit www.handlery.com/sd.
Lafayette Hotel & Suites
Once home to some of Hollywood’s finest, the Lafayette allows non-hotel guests access to their Olympic-size swimming pool for a $5 membership fee each time you want to utilize their facilities.
Although the pool may be Olympic, the pool deck is not, so get there early on a weekend if you want to snag a lounge chair. Otherwise, do as you would at the beach and throw your towel down in what free space you can find. While you’re here, sip on a cocktail and munch on some food from the “L” Bar & Grill.
The Lafayette Hotel & Suites is located on 2223 El Cajon Blvd. For more details, visit www.lafayettehotelsd.com or call 619-296-2101.
The Pearl Hotel
On Sundays, grab brunch between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. for $20 (includes an entrée and bottomless mimosas) and enjoy some action by the water until 8 p.m. at the Pearl Hotel in Point Loma. The Groove 24/7 DJs provide the musical ambiance and you can also keep yourself entertained with some sideline ping pong and board games.
Generally on the last Sunday of each month, StyleXplorers.com takes the helm with themes like “The Italian Job” and “Preppy Poolside” from 2 to 8 p.m. and bring a eclectic style of fashion, music, drink specials and fun. No cover.
And don’t forget about the Pearl’s Dive-In Theatre, a weekly series every Wednesday night starting at 8 p.m. Movies of all genres are projected\ on a screen above the pool and admission is free.

Bud Kearns Pool
If you feel like getting a few laps in at the community pool or just relaxing in a floatie, stop by the Bud Kearns Pool for $5 per visit or $95 for 20 visits (20 swim discount passes may be used at any city pool and expire one year from the date of issuance).
Recreation and lap swim times vary by day, but generally the pool is open Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., Friday from 1 to 8 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. (check Web site for specifics).
On Saturday, Aug. 9, the Bud Kearns Pool has a Dive-In Movie of its own starting at 8 p.m. for $5. But keep in mind this is an event for the whole family, so the movie will be rated G or PG.
The Bud Kearns Pool is located on 2229 Morley Field Drive. For more details, visit www.sandiego.gov/park-and-recreation/aquatics.
Screen on the Green
Now this may not be a water sport (although there is a lily pond nearby), the San Diego Museum of Art’s annual and free Screen on the Green series is not to be missed.
Starting on Thursday, July 31 and continuing every Thursday at 8 p.m. through August, movies can be seen on the East Lawn in Balboa Park, near the Botanical Building and the Casa del Prado. This year, Screen on the Green celebrates two of the museums summer exhibitions: Georgie O’Keeffe and the Women of the Stieglitz Circle and Eleanor Antin: Historical Takes with movies like Sabrina and Bye-Bye Birdie.
It’s awesome to see so many people gathering together to enjoy the movies, weather, and scenery at Screen on the Green. Be sure to get there early if you want a spot close to the screen because prime movie-watching real estate goes quickly!
For a full list of movies being shown, visit www.sdmart.org/calender-screen-on-the-green.html. The San Diego Museum of Art is located at 1450 El Prado in Balboa Park.
