You’re A Good Man, Charlie Brown: White Dog Theatre Company’s mission is to produce high-quality, affordable theater productions in North County. This year, the company’s summer musical features two casts. You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown is a musical comedy based on the cartoon characters created by Charles M. Schultz in his comic strip Peanuts. White Dog’s adult cast features some of the region’s finest acting talent and the youth cast will show off some of San Diego’s rising stars in the production. Tickets for the show are $15 for adults and $10 for seniors, students, and military. The show runs from Aug. 7-31 with varying showtimes. For reservations call 760-405-3212. Women’s Fest: The San Diego LGBT Community Center’s Women’s Resource Center invites community members to participate in San Diego Women’s Fest, a free day-long festival of workshops, entertainment and resources for lesbian, bisexual and transgender women at The Center. The events will run from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The goal of the free festival is to empower LBT women to learn new skills, celebrate women’s creativity, build a stronger and more diverse community and gain access to essential health resources. The festival will focus on five topics: health, family and relationships; arts and crafts; community and movement building; and building skills for power and success. CityFest 25: The Hillcrest CityFest is the biggest street party in the county and the largest arts and crafts event in the state of California. This year, there is much to celebrate as CityFest celebrates 25 years! Fifth Avenue, from University to Upas, will be transformed into a giant party complete with entertainment on two stages and more than 250 booths will arts and crafts vendors, food, psychic readings, beer gardens and more. New this year will be the addition of the Hillcrest Book & Literacy Fair to CityFest. Bookseller’s Alley will be a space set apart for readers, writers, and celebrators of books and literature, on the block between Brookes Place and Anderson Place. This are will provide an opportunity for participants support local booksellers and reaffirm a love for books on paper. Several local bars and restaurants such as Babycakes, The Brass Rail, Urban Mo’s, and Hula’s will also join in the fun and host their own special CityFest parties. Hillcrest Comedy: Stand-up comedy invades Hillcrest! Hillcrest Comedy, which spotlights local stand-up talent, holds a show inside the beautiful Bamboo Lounge on the second Sunday of every month with different comedians appearing each time. Patrons have the option of drinking and dining at the venue. This month’s headline performer is Dangerous Dick of the Comedy Store and the event will be hosted by Ophelia Later. Cover is $4. Ballet Folklorico: The Studio at North Park offers classes for children, teens and adults with the mission of creating an environment that is exciting, fun and challenging. One of the studio’s popular Monday evening classes is Intro to Ballet Folklorico for Adults. Participants will have fun learning the basics of Mexican Folklorico dances, including the technique of the foot work-zapateado and arm motions. The class provides the opportunity to learn the dance moves and get a greater understanding of the culture. No special shoes are needed for the class; hard-sole shoes are sufficient for the class, which also provides a great workout. The class, which runs from 6:15-7:15 p.m., is $15. Mummies: Secrets of the Pharaoh: The Reuben H. Fleet Science Center is currently presenting the story of one of the greatest archaeological finds in modern history: the late 19th century discovery of a cache of 40 royal mummies, including 12 pharaohs of Egypt in a single tomb. Among them were three of the greatest pharaohs that ever lived: the legendary Rameses the Great, his father Seti 1, and his son. Mummies: Secrets of the Pharaoh features breathtaking scenes of natural beauty and stunning locations combined with CGI sequences, lavish sets and period re-creations. The IMAX film will be playing at the Science Center’s auditorium through Sept. 3. Showtimes and ticket prices vary and are available online. The Reuben H. GLBT Meditation Class: Seeking: A mind that will be quiet when asked, is less opinionated, more understanding and is content with quiet nights at home alone, non-critical of my faults and willing to embrace the being I am. Michael Tompkin’s studio offers free Meditation Classes for the GLBT community on Saturdays at The Center and Wednesdays at the studio. Classes are open to all levels of practitioners and do not revolve around or advocate any specific religious practices. Toast to Hillcrest: The second annual Toast to Hillcrest will be held from 5:30-8 p.m. as a fund-raiser for the Hillcrest History Guild. Participants 21 years and older will have the opportunity to celebrate one of the nation’s best neighborhoods with wine, spirits and nibbles. For just $25, a number of Hillcrest restaurants, bars, and lounges will offer tastings of their finest treats. A double-decker red bus will cruise the neighborhood giving participants unlimited rides around the neighborhood as they jump on and off the bus at the various venues. As an activist for social change, Wendy is pushing the boundaries on firmly rooted notions in mainstream society on relationships, love, gender, sexual equality and sexual politics.
