Nicole Murray-Ramirez scholarship fund taking applications
The Nicole Murray-Ramirez LGBT Scholarship Fund, a program of the Imperial Court de San Diego, administered by The San Diego LGBT Community Center, is accepting applications. Applications are available on The Center’s Web site at www.thecentersd.org and must be received with all accompanying documentation by Aug. 31 at 5 p.m.
Founded in 1979, the fund has awarded scholarships to deserving GLBT students who have gone on to become professionals and community leaders. It is the mission of the fund to support and encourage GLBT students to further their education and become responsible and active members of the GLBT community.
GLBT students of vocational/technical schools, community colleges, four-year colleges and graduate schools are eligible and urged to apply. To fill out the online application, students without computers can use The Center’s David Bohnett Cyber Center, which provides free computer access Monday through Friday 9:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m.

Wall of Honor ceremony to honor community members
The Center and the Imperial Court de San Diego (ICDSD) will hold a ceremony to induct the 2008 honorees into the San Diego LGBT Community Wall of Honor this Friday, Aug. 15. Located in the auditorium of The Center, the wall was created in 2004 by Nicole Murray-Ramirez, ICDSD, and The Center to recognize and celebrate those San Diego GLBT community members and allies who have had a significant positive impact on the community.
The 2008 inductees are Fred Acheson, Larry Baza, Michael Clark, Phyllis Jackson, George Murphy and Frank Stiriti.
A ceremony will be held from 6-8 p.m. The public is invited and business casual attire is requested.

Registration for AIDS Walk San Diego is open
Registration for the 19th annual AIDS Walk San Diego (AWSD) is open and participants are encouraged to sign-up now as an individual or as part of a team. The walk will be held on Sunday, Sept. 28 in Balboa Park.
AIDS Walk is the largest one-day HIV/AIDS fund-raising event in San Diego. AWSD is also the largest nongovernmental provider of funds for San Diego County HIV/AIDS service organizations.
To register for AIDS Walk San Diego, visit www.aidswalksd.org. The registration page gives participants the options to register as an individual, start a team, or join a team. Individual adult registration is $35.
AWSD is presented by Nordstrom, and organized by The Center.
Cancer survivors honored during Downtown Relay For Life
Local cancer survivors and their families are invited to participate in the Downtown San Diego Relay for Life this weekend Aug. 16-17, at Embarcadero North. Relay for Life is the American Cancer Society’s premier community event, featuring a 24-hour campout to increase awareness of the incidence of cancer and how to prevent its occurrence.
Cancer survivors will be honored in a special lap around the track following opening ceremonies at 10 a.m., which include a symbolic release of doves. There is no fee to participate but prior registration is suggested.
Entertainment and activities for all ages are scheduled throughout the day and night. Live, local musical groups from Downtown clubs and coffee shops will perform from 10:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. The luminaria ceremony, in which candle-lit luminaries decorated with the names of cancer survivors or those lost to cancer are placed around the track to light the way for walkers and runners, is at 9 p.m. Minimum suggested luminary donations are $10 per bag.

Third annual Senior Resource Fair to be held
The third annual Senior Resource Fair, “Life is a Banquet,” will be held on Saturday, Aug. 23 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at The Center. The free event has been designed to provide resources and information for GLBT men and women 50 years of age and older.
The fair will include more than 40 exhibitors, workshops, entertainment and a noon luncheon. Workshops will be presented by Michael Kimmel, Jennifer Gunsaullus, Michael Majeski and Dr. Einck of the American Cancer Society. Entertainment will be provided by In-A-Chord, and Chris Schneider, with a special performance by the Sue Palmer Trio.

South Bay Pride scheduled for Aug. 24
The South Bay Alliance will present South Bay Pride on Sunday, Aug. 24, from 1-5 p.m. in Chula Vista’s Memorial Park. The purpose of the event is to provide visibility to the GLBT community living in San Diego’s South Bay communities and to provide residents an opportunity to spend a day together celebrating their pride.
According to the South Bay Alliance’s Web site, a 2005 American Community Survey conducted for the San Diego metropolitan area found that at least 17,000 GLBT residents reside in the South Bay area.
The day will include vendors, information tables, food, and live entertainment by Latin Rhythm Creations, Roxy Blue and Rhythm and the Method.

SDWC’s fall season kicks off Aug. 24
The San Diego Women’s Chorus (SDWC) invites women of all ages, ethnicities, sexual orientations and skill levels to come and sing with the group this fall. Those who are not interested in singing can also be a part of the SDWC by joining the group’s production team. SDWC has begun to put together the 2008-2009 season and is looking for new members and volunteers to be a part of the season.
The first rehearsal of the group’s fall season will be held Sunday, Aug. 24 at 4 p.m. at the University Christian Church. Interested singers should visit the group’s Web site to check-out the membership requirements and then e-mail info@sdwc.org to express interest.

Gay men’s Grand Canyon escape to benefit The Center
The Center will be hosting a Grand Canyon getaway for men in the community from Aug. 30 through Sept. 3. The trip will include three nights of camping and a visit to the waterfalls along the Havasu River in the Grand Canyon. A portion of the proceeds from the trip will benefit The Center. Participants will have the opportunity to swim in natural travertine pools, explore the canyon and enjoy the camaraderie of men from San Diego. There will be no luxury hotels, no room service and no plumbing.

Tickets available for SDHDF boat cruise
The San Diego Human Dignity Foundation (SDHDF) has made tickets available for its annual champagne brunch and boat cruise event, to be held Sunday, Sept. 14 from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event will be held on the California Spirit, the newest and most deluxe ship in San Diego Harbor Excursion’s fleet. The boat cruise is held to honor the generous individuals and organizations that have set up funds with the foundation to benefit the GLBT community.
Ticket packages range from $95 to $1,000 and include the cruise and brunch. Passes can be purchased online at www.sdhdf.org.
The SDHDF was established in 1996 with a mission to improve the quality of life within San Diego’s GLBT community by promoting responsible philanthropy to enact positive social change.

Family Matters to host Big Family BBQ
Family Matters will host its Big Family BBQ on Sunday, Sept. 21 at Trolley Barn Park. The event is for all families, and guests are encouraged to bring members of their immediate and extended families, along with neighbors, loved ones, and friends.
The barbecue, which will run from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., will feature a number of family-friendly activities including music, karaoke, face-painting, balloon art, jumps and slides, games, prizes and social time. A full lunch and beverages will be available for $10. Children under five years of age eat free.
