Logging on, getting off, funding discrimination

The owners of ManHunt.net may consider revising the site’s terms and agreements. For example, they may consider adding: “Warning: Monthly membership fees may fund right-wing Republican politics, violations of constitutional rights and discrimination based on sexual orientation.”
Users be warned.
Jonathan Crutchley, cofounder and chairman of ManHunt.net, was asked to resign from the board of directors last week after being outed as a donor to Sen. John McCain’s presidential campaign.
Crutchley donated the maximum amount allowed, $2,300, to McCain’s campaign.
Why the fuss?
The presumptive Republican presidential nominee supports a same-sex marriage ban in his home state, Arizona, and supports Proposition 8, the November ballot initiative that would ban same-sex marriage in California.
That’s only the beginning: he supports the military policy Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell, he does not support extending federal hate crimes legislation to include discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation, and he’s an ardent supporter of the war in Iraq.
The list goes on.
Crutchley, defending his support of McCain, responded to the criticism on a message board. “I believe McCain will be a better commander-in-chief than [Barack] Obama, who also opposes gay marriage,” he wrote. “If we have an experienced, seasoned person defending the country in this dangerous age, we will be able to argue about the gay agenda later.”
True, Sen. Obama also believes marriage is defined as between a man and a woman – though the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee opposes Proposition 8. And in contrast to McCain, Obama supports federal hate crimes legislation and supports a repeal of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.
While the $2,300 donation to the Republican’s campaign is a drop in the bucket considering the $30 million in revenue the site generates, the fact is, the site Crutchley founded profits from more than one million gay men, and the $2,300 he donated to McCain’s campaign is money he’s taken from our community to harm its progress.
Sound fair? With a number of alternatives to ManHunt.net, men (and women) in our community should think twice before logging on.
Crutchley’s concerns – seemingly, national security and fiscal policy – are valid concerns, but Crutchley was willing to fund eight more years of zero progress.
Of course, there was fallout when news surfaced of Crutchley’s donation.
McCain’s campaign returned the money, which Crutchley promptly funneled into the Obama campaign.
The Web site’s board of directors also issued a statement.
“It should be known that Jonathan Crutchley’s donation to McCain left the entire board in disbelief,” said cofounder and Crutchley’s partner, Larry Basile, in a statement. “I am disappointed that we have lost some customers, and I understand the anger. It is too bad for the Web site if we lose customers, but please never refer to me as a Republican. I consider it an offense.”
Damage control, anyone?
As a cofounder and majority stakeholder, and partnered to Basile, who remains on the board, Crutchley will continue to profit from our community.
Members of our community should not be exempt from scrutiny. We’ve turned a critical eye toward outsiders and allies, and encouraged other to join boycotts of businesses and individuals who do not support equal marriage rights for same-sex couples. It would be shortsighted and hypocritical to expect less from businesses that market specifically toward GLBT people, and leaders within our community.
