Pretentiendo (Ugly Me): Media Arts Center San Diego’s Latino Film Festival will present its’ ninth annual Cinema en tu Idioma Film Series, which showcases new Latin American, Mexican and Spanish cinema. The four-month series will begin with the screening of Pretentiendo (Ugly Me) from Aug. 22-28 at UltraStar Mission Valley Cinemas. Pretentiendo stars Mexican film and telenova star Barbara Mori, and follows the story of a beautiful woman whose boyfriend cheats on her with her best friend. The fun, romantic comedy is set in beautiful Valparaiso, Chile. Screening times are 10:15 a.m., 12:45, 3:15, 5:45, 8:15, and 10:45 p.m. Tickets are $9.50. Philippine Cinema Showcase: More than 400 people are expected to attend the launch of a groundbreaking, year-long Philippine Cinema Showcase at the Chula Vista UltraStar Cinemas, kicked off with the film Donsol. The Philippines’ official entry to the Academy Awards for the Best Foreign Language Film, Donsol is a beautifully crafted romance film about a heartbroken whale shark guide, set in the turquoise waters of Donsol, Philippines. Life is a Banquet: The third annual Senior Resource Fair, “Life is a Banquet,” will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at The San Diego LGBT Community Center. The free event has been designed to provide resources and information for GLBT men and women 50 years of age and older. The fair will include more than 40 exhibitors, workshops, entertainment and a noon luncheon. Entertainment will be provided by In aChord, Chris Schneider and the Sue Palmer Trio. Daydream Believer: “Hey, hey, we’re The Monkees...!” Davy Jones, the 1960s pop idol and multifaceted entertainer, will bring his hits and antics to the stage of the San Diego Symphony’s Summer Pops Stage. Davy Jones first invaded teen hearts as the international idol of millions in the 1960s Emmy Award-winning television classic The Monkees. Since the show hit the small screen, Davy has triumphed as both a serious actor and a comedian on the theatrical stage; as a rock musician, composer and artist; and, true to his first love, as an extremely able horseman. Tickets for the 7:30 p.m. concert range from $15-$75. East Meets West: The popular Club Papi will team up with the sexy Club Asia team to present a special party called “East Meets West” at Rich’s. Ms. Lola will host the event, which will include superstar DJ Mike Bryant, two dance floors and drink specials all night long. Arrive early and take advantage of the open bar from 9-10 p.m. serving Smirnoff Vodka and Miller Lite Beer. The hottest of the Club Papi and Club Asia go-go boys will be “steaming it up together” all night long! This will be one event not to miss. South Bay Pride: The South Bay Alliance is building community among LGBT people and friends in South San Diego County, by providing opportunities for residents to meet, socialize, connect to GLBT friendly businesses, and mobilize for political action in the South Bay. The group’s biggest event of the year is the annual South Bay Pride celebration. The event, which runs from 1-5 p.m., will include music, entertainment, vendor and information booths, food, and a fun afternoon in Chula Vista’s Memorial Park. Nicole Murray-Ramirez will emcee the event, with entertainment by groups like the Latin Rhythm Creations, Rhythm and the Method, Roxy Blue & Band, and Allondra’s Dancers. Admission is free. In aChord: In aChord, San Diego’s premiere vocal jazz ensemble, has a sound like the Hi-Lo’s and Manhattan Transfer that astounds audiences with jazz, pop and vintage classics of yesteryear. With its signature tongue-in-cheek nostalgic style, In aChord has the perfect blend of snazzy and jazzy. The group is presenting a summertime concert for the community, featuring its latest selection of jazz-inspired favorites in a community setting. Tickets for the 4 p.m. concert are $10. The event will take place at the University Christian Church located at 3900 Cleveland Ave. in Hillcrest.

Men’s Discussion Group: The Men’s Discussion group provides a safe social and educational space for new or isolated community members to begin to experience decreased isolation, an increased sense of belonging and an opportunity to share their struggles and victories. Gentlemen’s Martini Night: The Gentlemen’s Martini Night provides gay men and their friends a place to socialize in an upscale location, which rotates venues each time. The group creates a positive image of the gay community by requiring a mandatory dress code and encouraging proper standards of behavior at events. The Aug. 26 event will be held at Solare Ristorante Lounge. Solare is nestled among the historic buildings of the former Naval Training Center, with a contemporary, modern ambience. The restaurant provides a gracious fine-dining experience with a welcoming undertone that is usually only displayed in private homes. The food draws on the traditions and flavors of Italy and the clean, fresh aesthetic of Asian cuisine. The event runs from 6-9 p.m. and cover is $5. Siren: Siren is an open-mic event with a mission of providing a safe space in which women may support and inspire one another via the expression of the creative arts. All forms of expression are welcome, including spoken word, music, dance, drag, comedy, activism and others. All ages and people are welcome to attend, with the mic being reserved for women. Sign-ups begin at 7:30 p.m. with the show running from 8-9:30 p.m. The August installment of Siren will be the last one to be held at The Rubber Rose Gallery, which will close at the end of the month (The Rubber Rose Boutique will remain in business). Pop Thursday: Toga! Toga! Toga! Relive the best seven years of your college education as the Museum of Photographic Arts presents National Lampoon’s Animal House, as part of its Pop Thursday program. Directed by John Landis, this raunchy, screwball comedy offers a relentless spoof of 1960s college life by following the hilarious adventures of a misfit group of fraternity boys. Enjoy one of the best college comedies ever made from a seat in MoPA’s theater or watch from the bar as it is projected on the walls. Grab a drink. Take in the art. Snap a portrait in one of MoPA’s antique photo booths and get crafty with interactive projects. The event begins at 6 p.m. with the film being screened at 7 p.m. Cost is $6 for the general public, free for museum members. An after party will be held at Airport Lounge in Little Italy.
