Family Movie Night: Family Matters will host a family-friendly movie night at 6 p.m. at The San Diego LGBT Community Center. Attendees are asked to bring their favorite family movie and each child in attendance will vote on which movie is shown. For $10 per family, the night will include a screening of the selected movie, pizza, juice, soft drinks, popcorn and family fun. Chairs will be available, but families are encouraged to bring blankets, sleeping bags and pillows, as kids like to lay on the floor. Those considering parenthood are also invited to attend to meet other parents who will happily share their expertise! Rubber Rose Gallery Closing Party: The Rubber Rose, a popular boutique, gallery, and community space will be closing the gallery and community space portion of its business. The retail boutique will continue to operate and some of the smaller events and classes that have been held in the community gallery space will be moved into the retail area. The gallery space is up for lease, but in the meantime a gallery closing party will be held at 7 p.m. to celebrate two years of great events and good times. Voltage Active Duty: Celebrate Labor Day weekend with a special military-themed edition of Rich’s popular Voltage party. Voltage: Active Duty will feature hot military go-go boys, military themed decorations and funky house and electro pop remixes spun by DJ Nikno. There will also be a special performance at midnight. The first 500 people through the door will receive a free set of Active Duty dog tags, and active duty military personnel pay no cover by presenting valid military ID at the door. Hillcrest History Guild Fund- raiser: The Hillcrest History Guild will host a fund-raiser at Hula’s Beach Bar and Grill from 2-6 p.m. A $10 suggested donation includes two coupons for $1 specialty cocktails. The event will also include an auction, raffle, samples from Hula’s menu served by local celebrities, hula dancers and hula dancing lessons, contests, prizes and other surprises. The auction grand prizes will be a three-night stay in Maui, and lunch with District Three City Council candidate Todd Gloria or Stephen Whitburn. All proceeds from the event will benefit the Hillcrest History Guild, a group working to preserve the history of the neighborhood. End of Summer Splash: As a fund-raiser for AIDS Walk San Diego, Martinis Above Fourth will host a special “End of Summer Splash” event from 4-8 p.m. The event will include live entertainment, Rufskin swimsuit models, a silent auction and opportunity drawings. All donations received at the event, as well as a portion of the day’s sales will be donated to AIDS Walk through Martinis Above Fourth’s walking team. Those who join the restaurant’s team will be invited to a private party at Martinis following the walk, which will be held on Sunday, Sept. 28. Same-Sex Dance Club: KP Dance House hosts a same-sex dance club every Tuesday at Bacchus House at 7 p.m. The club is a sports and social club for the gay and lesbian community, focusing on international ballroom and Latin dancing, with a goal of creating an alternative to the night club and country western scene. A different style of dance is taught and practiced each month, with waltz and samba being the dances studied in September. Classes start on the first Tuesday of each month, and participants must attend the first session, or arrive 15 minutes early on the second Tuesday to be allowed to continue in classes that month. Each class is $5 for club members and $10 for non-members, with 50 percent of the proceeds being donated to the Hillcrest Youth Center. Dragalicious: Urban Mo’s and the Dreamgirls Revue will host “Dragalicious: A Drag Marathon” as a benefit for local performer Miss Cherry Blossum’s participation in the 2008 Aid for AIDS Best in Drag Show benefit. Aid for AIDS is the premier service provider of financial assistance to persons living below the poverty line and disabled with HIV/AIDS in Los Angeles County. The 2007 show raised close to $350,000. Locally, the three-hour Dragalicious show will begin at 8 p.m. and feature performances by Chad Michaels, Babette Schwartz, Morgan, Jasmine Masters, Dolly Levi, Ashley O’Day, Christina Monet, Bianca St. James, Norman and Divina. The event will also include raffle item and prizes from local businesses. Cover is $10, and the event is expected to sell out. Call for reservations. Closing Day at Del Mar: With just as much style and energy as Opening Day, fans celebrating closing day at the Del Mar Racetrack will witness the Del Mar Futurity, the track’s second most prestigious race. Following the races, revelers will pour into the paddock to party to the sounds of English Beat, performing hits like “Mirror in the Bathroom,” at the free Closing Day Party in the Paddock. Race track officials are expecting one of the most festive crowds of the season to toast another great year! The first post is at 2 p.m. with the party following the last race. Guys, Games & Grub: Each month, more than 100 men gather at The Center to play board and card games, make new friends and enjoy pizza, beer and soft drinks from 6:30-9:30 p.m. Guys, Games & Grub is a free event open to all men 21 years and older, with guys from all age groups well represented. The event gets bigger and better each month, and September’s Guys, Games & Grub will be a great way to relax, and hang out with new and old friends at summer’s end. Drop-In Writers Group: A drop-in writers group is held at Lestat’s Coffeehouse every Thursday from 5-6 p.m. The group is hosted by San Diego Writers, Ink., whose mission is to nurture writers and those wishing to explore the craft of writing, foster a literary community, promote literature and celebrate artistic diversity. Writers of all levels are welcome to “drop-in” and join the group to discuss work. Sandwiches, pastries, coffee, tea and other specialty drinks are available for purchase.
