Front Runners host Around Town Challenge Run and Walk
Street smarts and fast feet make for winning combo

This past Saturday the Frontrunners held their Around Town Challenge Run and Walk, with eight teams competing for prizes donated from local businesses, including Bourbon Street, Hamburger Mary’s, Moby Dick’s and Obelisk Bookstore. The race was run on a six-mile course with eight checkpoints along the way. Teams had to decipher clues given out at the beginning of the race in order to find all eight of the checkpoints and reach their final destination.
With clues like the stumper, “At least two states, Missouri and Texas, and one foreign country, Germany, claim to have invented it, but this namesake’s nursery-rhyme companion was ineligible to become one,” to guide them the course was not only a physical challenge, but a mental one. None of the teams were able to solve the clue that would have led them to Hamburger Mary’s (both of the states and Germany claim to be the birthplace of the burger, and Mary had a little lamb for a sidekick, which doesn’t qualify for an all-beef patty).
“We thought it went really well,” John Lockhart, one of the event’s organizers, told the Gay and Lesbian Times. “There was a high level of enthusiasm, people had a lot of fun and there was only one check point that no team could find.”
The winning team of Barbara Dean and Frank Sobon, who competed under the name “We Dig Chicks” competed the course in two hours and 28 minutes, finding seven out of the eight checkpoints.
Competitors also had to complete a trivia quiz in order to begin the race. The first team with the most correct questions answered got to start the race first, but for team “Street Walker and Clueless” with Emil Montoya and Ed Karas running, a finish time of two hours and 57 minutes was not good enough.
A four-person team organized this year’s race, laying out the course and identifying each of the eight check points before coming up with clues to either confuse or help the runners on their way to the final destination, Park Manor Hotel. Following the race the competitors enjoyed an awards ceremony at Jimmy Carter’s Café.
