Museum of the Living Artist: The San Diego Art Institute’s Museum of the Living Artist will present the juried and awarded artwork from “Outstanding Visual Artists” for the San Diego region Kathleen Thomson and Diana Duval. The show, which will also feature Linda Vista Leaders Art, runs from Aug. 28 to Oct. 5. Admission is free for institute members and $3 for non-members. Senior citizens, military and students are $2. Goodbye summer pool party: MPower SD through the Gay Men’s Health Program is hosting a “Goodbye to Summer” pool party celebration at a private residence from noon to 4 p.m. There will be lots of men, plenty of food and a whole lot of fun for everyone involved. Happy Yoga: The Center’s 50 and Better Club will offer Happy Yoga class from 11 a.m. to noon at The Center. Everyone and all ages are welcome to this class. Happy Yoga is a celebration and includes humor and fun into the traditional yoga workout. Participants should bring a yoga mat. Flaming Gaytors: The second annual Flaming Gaytor swim meet will be held at the Tierrasanta Recreation Center from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. San Diego’s Different Strokes Swim Team (DSST) will host this unofficial meet, welcoming an estimated 75 swimmers from San Diego to San Francisco. In addition to many of the usual swim meet events, the Flaming Gaytor features several unique relays, such as driving a toy car on the bottom of the pool, and kicking across the pool and back on top of a squeaky inflatable gator. The grand finale is a “drag” race that requires swimmers to wear a drag outfit, swim 50 yards and then transfer the outfit to the next swimmer on their relay team. University Heights Art: The third annual University Heights Arts Open will be held Sept. 6-7 and will feature a free, self-guided tour of the arts. The weekend will showcase the works of more than 100 new and celebrated artists, playwrights, performers and musicians from the San Diego region. The goal of the event is to enliven and celebrate the University Heights community. The tour begins at Birney Academy of International Studies located at 4345 Campus Ave. in University Heights and spans a two mile radius incorporating businesses, schools, churches, theaters, and a shuttle tour of more than 20 artist studios in the area. Lemon “Aid” Stand: Every Sunday Bite hosts its Lemon “Aid” Stand with sales benefiting local charitable causes. This week’s stand will benefit the Hillcrest History Guild (HHG) from 1-4 p.m. The HHG is working to preserve the 101-year history of Hillcrest, by creating a comprehensive online archive of the neighborhood. Bite has also recently added a new “Lazy Sunday Lunch Menu,” with a portion of sales from this menu also being donated to the HHG. San Diego Men’s Chorus: Shower singer? Seasoned performer? Either way, the San Diego Men’s Chorus (SDMC) is looking for you! No experience is necessary, just a commitment to hard work, fun and making a difference. SDMC is San Diego’s original gay men’s chorus and it is gearing up for its 24th annual holiday concert, which will be titled “fa la la la…fabulous!,” and feature “American Idol” finalist Paris Bennett. Gentlemen’s Martini Night: The Gentlemen’s Martini Night provides gay men and their friends a place to socialize in an upscale location, which rotates venues each time. The group creates a positive image of the gay community by requiring a mandatory dress code and encouraging proper standards of behavior at events. The Sept. 9 event will be held at Top of the Park and will feature a number of featured hors d’oeuvres and drinks from the popular roof-top venue’s menu. The event runs from 6-9 p.m. and cover is $5. SummerBash 2008: SummerBash 2008 will kick off with tasty fare from more than 20 San Diego restaurants, followed by a concert by The Steely Damned, a 15-piece tribute band playing the music of Steely Dan. The general public is invited to celebrate the collaborative efforts of the local culinary community and recognize the dedication of restaurateurs, chefs, managers, bartenders, servers, front of house staff, vendors and more. Tickets are $20 per person and proceeds will benefit San Diego State University’s Hospitality and Tourism Management program. No Exit: Diversionary Theatre’s second production of the 2008-2009 season is Jean Paul Sartre’s classic fantasy No Exit, running Sept. 11 through Oct. 5. No Exit is a 1944 existentialist play originally published in French as Huis Clos (meaning “in camera” or “behind closed doors”). Diversionary is using the Samuel French published script as adapted from the French by Paul Bowles. Directed by Esther Emery, the cast features Monique Gaffney as Inez, Steven Lone as Cradeau, Rhianna Basore as Estelle and Kevin Morrison as the Bellboy. A classic line from the play is, “Hell is other people.” Ticket prices and showtimes vary. Diversionary Theatre is located at 4545 Park Blvd. in University Heights. www.diversionary.org
Boots N’ Briefs: It’s Rodeo time! The 2008 Coors Light San Diego Rodeo is here and will kick off with the annual Boots N’ Briefs charity fundraiser. Boots N’ Briefs, hosted by the GSGRA-GSDC, benefits a local organization and is the official start to San Diego’s exciting Gay Rodeo Weekend. Miss Kitty Litter will host the event at Kicker’s inside Urban Mo’s from 7 p.m. to 2 a.m. Rodeo weekend will continue with a number of other events through Sept. 14, including a pool party, dance contests, the rodeo, and an awards ceremony.
