Street Scene San Diego: Street Scene was the brainchild of a San Diego native who has turned his passion for music and the arts into a festival that features an eclectic coalescence of both. Taking place in one of the most vibrant and energetic cities, Street Scene is a signature event unlike any other. This year will mark the 24th annual Street Scene and will feature 40 bands, on four stages, over two nights. Local and headline entertainment including Beck will perform. To celebrate its history and future, Street Scene is preparing to be better than ever with an all-ages celebration set in the streets of East Village and adjacent to Petco Park. The festivities will be centralized in an uninterrupted venue at the heart of Downtown in a setting that enhances the feeling that Street Scene is San Diego’s ultimate summer block party. A one day pass is $65, and a two day pass is $95. Street Scene runs from 4 p.m. to midnight Friday and Satuday, 14th Avenue between J Street and Imperial Avenue in Downtown’s East Village. www.street-scene.com
Vintage Trunk Show: House.Boi will present a Vintage Trunk Show by Lou’s Kustoms from 6-9 p.m. Event attendees will see Lou’s Kustoms full line of funky vintage buckles and clothing worn by many celebrities. The evening show will include racks full of clothing, buckles and cocktails, making for an enjoyable evening at House.Boi. Center Pops Concert – Ultimate Broadway: The best of Broadway is recreated in the season’s first Center Pops Concert at California Center for the Arts, Escondido. Jung-Ho Pak and the San Diego Chamber Orchestra will present several fabulous singers who will join them to recreate the top Broadway show-stopping moments that we all know and love. Hear favorites from the musical scores of The Sound of Music, The King and I, Oklahoma!, South Pacific, Cats, The Phantom of the Opera, Evita, Sunset Boulevard and more. Family Matters Big Family BBQ: The annual Family Matters Big Family BBQ will take place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Trolley Barn Park. Everyone, including the kids, aunts, uncles, cousins, grandparents, grandkids, friends and neighbors is welcome! The event will include music, karaoke, face painting, balloon art, unlimited play time on jumps and slides, family wheel barrow races, potato sack races, three-legged races, prizes, social time, and of course, a barbecue! Children under five are free and all others pay $10 for lunch and beverages. Participants are encouraged to bring blankets, chairs, sunscreen, and an umbrella or canopy. Endless Summer: While Sept. 21 is officially the last day of summer, San Diego Pix will present a special event from 4-8 p.m. encouraging party-goers to pretend that it’s “not” the end of summer. The W Hotel will be the site of “The Endless Summer Beach Party,” with a rooftop beach lounge, pool and dancing to the sounds of Rich’s DJ Nikno. Guests who arrive early will be treated to an open bar with p.i.n.k. Vodka from 4-5 p.m. The party will continue at Urban Mo’s for the weekly Detour Party, and then will end at Rich’s. The $20 wristband includes admission to all three of the events. All proceeds will benefit the San Diego LGBT Community Center. The W Hotel is located at 421 West B St. in Downtown San Diego. Ladies Burlesque Jazz: The Studio at North Park offers a wide-range of classes for people of all ages and levels, including tap dancing, salsa, hip-hop, zumba, ballet and belly dancing. Every Monday from 7:10-8:10 p.m. is Ladies Burlesque Jazz, which explores classic jazz music to develop phrasing, as well as burlesque and classic jazz dance techniques. The class is taught by instructor Claudia Vorce. Classes are $15 each with discounts if multiple classes are purchased at one time. Otay Ranch Farmers Market: One of the newest certified farmers markets to add to San Diego’s great mix takes place every Tuesday from 4-8 p.m. at the Otay Ranch Town Center. The market, includes farm fresh produce and specialty food items, as well as two entertainment stages. Finest City Squares: The Finest City Squares of San Diego (FCS) is starting a new GLBT square dance beginning class this September. The class will meet every Wednesday night with open enrollment and free classes on Sept. 24 and Oct. 1. After that, each class is $5. Everyone is encouraged to come and try out square dancing and see it is for you! Square dancing is a fun, healthy, high energy activity that uses mostly modern, up-beat music. FCS regularly participates in many gay and straight events across the city and country. Classes run from 7:30-9 p.m., but participants are encouraged to arrive at 7:15 p.m. to meet, greet, and register. Dress comfortably; no partner is needed. San Diego Film Festival: The 2008 San Diego Film Festival is here! Festival-goers will have the opportunity to celebrate and share their passion for the independence of film at the seventh annual event, which will be held Sept. 25-28 in the Gaslamp Theatre. The San Diego Film Festival will screen 70 films during four days, and also include parties, discussions, meet ‘n’ greets and other special events. Passes are available by the day, for the whole event, and a VIP option is also available. Discounts are offered to students, military and senior citizens. La Jolla Gallery & Wine Walk: Wine lovers rejoice! The fifth annual La Jolla Gallery and Wine Walk will take place from 5-9 p.m. and include breathtaking views, amazing cuisines and fine wines in the Village of La Jolla. Participants are invited to explore more than 20 of La Jolla’s most impeccable art galleries, while observing the spectacular coastal seascape, sampling cuisines served up by La Jolla’s finest restaurants, and tasting 50 robust red and complex white wines.
