Lesbian MeetUp: San Diego’s Lesbian MeetUp.com group will host a private house concert featuring Danielle LoPresti & The Masses at 7:30 p.m. Kelcie Kopf founded the group in 2007, after not being able find a similar online group when she moved to San Diego. San Diego’s Lesbian MeetUp.com group, now with more than 300 members, is a place for women to find community, support and friendship. The intimate performance will also feature Alicia Champion, doing a special acoustic set. To attend, you must sign up and join the MeetUp.com group. Nuts & Bolts: Gay Men’s Health Services at Family Helath Centers of San Diego will host the “Nuts & Bolts” workshop starting at 11 a.m. The free interactive workshop will explore healthy gay connections and allow men in the community to network while learning skills to build effective healthy gay connections with others. The workshop will be held at a private residence. Transgender Community Picnic: The fifth annual Transgender Community Picnic will take place from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Balboa Park. The event is hosted by Project STAR and the Transgender Advocacy and Services Center (TASC). Everyone is invited to attend this free, fun community event. Attendees are asked to bring a side dish to share. The picnic will take place at Balboa Park along Sixth Avenue just beyond the Upas Street entrance. Freedom Banquet: The San Diego Democratic Club will host its’ annual Freedom Banquet with a reception and dinner at the Hyatt Regency Resort. The VIP reception will begin at 6 p.m. followed by the general reception at 6:30 p.m. and dinner and program at 7:30 p.m. California Assembly Speaker Karen Bass will present the keynote address, at the event which includes the club’s annual awards presentation. AIDS Walk San Diego: AIDS Walk San Diego is San Diego’s largest one-day HIV/AIDS fund-raiser and the biggest non-governmental financial provider for HIV/AIDS in San Diego County. Dozens of agencies, serving thousands of clients, rely on funds raised at the annual AIDS Walk to help provide essential prevention and care programs to thousands of men, women and children living with HIV/AIDS. Established as AIDS Walk San Diego in 1989, this event took place for two years prior as the Walk for Life. Since 1989, AIDS Walk San Diego has raised more than $7 million. Thousands of people will join together on this Sunday morning to walk, run, and raise funds for HIV/AIDS. The event begins at 8 a.m. at Quince and Sixth Avenues in Balboa Park. www.aidswalksd.org
Garage Sale: Got junk? Want to make some extra cash off of stuff you don’t need or want anymore? How about a group garage sale at your favorite local porn shack? The Rubber Rose Boutique will be reserving parking spots for $20 per space on a first come, first serve basis for those who wish to “sell their stuff”. Space is limited, so interested parties should RSVP as soon as possible. Participants are welcome to share the space with friends, and the Rubber Rose will do all the advertising for you! Signs will be posted along University Avenue directing people to the site. Everyone is welcome to shop the garage from 8 a.m. to noon. Drawing on Stone: Gallery 3737 will present the artwork of Gabriel Fernandez in a new exhibit titled “Drawing on Stone.” Fernandez is a San Diego based and trained artist. The collection includes an eclectic set of fine art prints showcasing Fernandez’s unique style of lithographic artwork. The opening reception for the exhibit will run from 6-9 p.m. at Gallery 3737 located at 3737 Adams Ave. in Normal Heights. Everyone is welcome and admission is free. Guys, Games, & Grub: Each month, more than 100 men gather at The Center to play board and card games, make new friends and enjoy pizza, beer and soft drinks from 6:30-9:30 p.m. Guys, Games & Grub is a free event open to all men 21 years and older, with guys from all age groups well represented. The event gets bigger and better each month, and September’s Guys, Games & Grub will be a great way to relax, and hang out with new and old friends at summer’s end. San Diego Women’s Film Festival: The sixth annual San Diego Women’s Film Festival (SDWFF) will be held from Oct. 2-5 at Reading Cinemas Gaslamp Theaters. SDWFF is Southern California’s most notable and longest running women’s film festival. Over 100 women positive films will be screened at the festival which is sponsored by the San Diego Women’s Film Foundation. Single films are $10, day passes are $30, and full weekend passes are $50. Liberty Awards: Lambda Legal will present the West Coast Liberty Awards at the Director’s Guild in Los Angeles. Wilson Cruz will host the event, which will honor actress Sheryl Lee Ralph, and attorneys Heller Ehrman and David Codell. The event is known as one of Southern California’s most important and meaningful awards ceremonies of the year as it honors those heroes who have made strides in the fight for full recognition of the civil rights of lesbians, gay men, bisexuals, transgender people and those with HIV.
