“How can a politician her age have never have gone to Europe? … You don’t need to be a pointy-headed elitist to travel abroad. You need curiosity and a hunger to see the world. What kind of a person (who has the money) arrives at the age of 44 and has only been out of the country once, on an official tour to Iraq? Sarah Palin’s travel record is that of a provincial, not someone who is equipped to deal with global issues. But some people like that. She’s never traveled to Europe, Asia, Africa, South America or Down Under? That makes her like them. … I trust the American people will see through Palin, and save the Republic in November.”
Chicago Sun-Times film critic Roger Ebert in a Sept. 11 column.
“A college professor of mine helped me to see the lives of LGBT people from a different perspective. He was the first openly gay professor that I had ever come in contact with, or openly gay person of authority that I had come in contact with. And he was just a terrific guy. His comfort in his own skin and the friendship we developed helped to educate me on a number of these issues.”
Barack Obama to the Washington Blade, Sept. 10.
“He (Barack Obama) was one of those unusual, straight young men who was secure enough in his sexuality that he was not fearful of being associated with me, whether that involved taking a class or just talking socially. … He was remarkable in that he was not intimidated by a publicly gay figure and, in fact, was interested in learning from me, whether formally or informally. That required an extraordinary kind of confidence in an 18- or 19-year-old – the kind that comes from somewhere deep inside … He demonstrated a kind of social courage, which has served him well and helped get him where he is today.”
Former Occidental College political science professor Lawrence Goldyn, to whom Obama refers in the previous quote, to the Washington Blade, Sept. 10.
“Well, the food is gay. The water is gay. There’s a gay vibe.”
Ellen DeGeneres when asked by Newsweek, “What’s the difference between a gay wedding and a straight one?” Sept. 6.
“I cried when I saw her, because we didn’t want to see our outfits beforehand. Actually, I could cry right now thinking about it. I never thought I would have that experience of getting married. I didn’t think I was missing anything. I just didn’t think about it. But to see her for the first time and to cut a wedding cake, that was surreal for me and I got to experience that with our families around us. I didn’t realize how special it was until I did it.”
Ellen DeGeneres on her and Portia de Rossi’s recent wedding, to Newsweek, Sept. 6.
“This may surprise people, but I find Barney Frank to be very accessible and Tammy Baldwin not.”
Veteran gay press journalist Lisa Keen, former editor of the Washington Blade, as quoted in the September issue of the gay press newsletter “Press Pass Q.” Frank, D-Mass., and Baldwin, D-Wis., are Congress’ two openly gay members. The comment was made at the recent convention of the National Lesbian and Gay Journalists Association.
“I have to agree. (While) very bright, articulate and knowledgeable, for whatever reason she (Baldwin) does not seem to like press interviews.”
Veteran Washington Blade reporter Lou Chibbaro Jr. responding to Keen.
