Totally Red Hot ’80s!: Dust off your hot pink pumps and prepare for the ’80s invasion! The Women’s Resource Center (WRC) presents “Totally Red Hot ’80s,” a women’s nightclub. DJ Laura Jane will be in the house, spinning your favorite hits from the ’80s, with door prizes, dessert and more for only $5 per person! Guests are encouraged to wear ’80s inspired attire (think neon, leggings, or anything Madonna-inspired), to participate in the “Totally Awesome Costume Contest.” A prize will also be given to the person who brings the most outrageous photograph of herself from the ’80s. Tickets will be available at the door. Women 21 and up are welcome and a no-host bar will be available. Proceeds benefit the many programs of The San Diego LGBT Community Center’s Women’s Resource Center. Macy’s Passport In-Store Event: While AIDSWalk San Diego 2008 may have already passed, you can still help support the event as AIDS Walk San Diego will participate in the Macy’s Passport In-Store Event on Friday, Oct. 3 and Saturday, Oct. 4. This activity-filled fund-raiser, which takes place at Macy’s Fashion Valley, Macy’s Mission Valley and Macy’s Mission Valley Home, offers special discounts, cooking demonstrations, fashion events, special giveaways and the chance to win a $1,000 Macy’s shopping spree. AIDS Walk San Diego will retain 100 percent of the proceeds from tickets sold through these efforts. Macy’s Passport In-Store Event participants get the $10 donation back by saving $10 on one regular, sale or clearance priced purchase of $25 or more throughout the store; get 20 percent off regular sale and clearance women’s men’s and kids’ apparel and accessories; fine, bridge and fashion jewelry; Get 10 percent off on regular, sale & clearance furniture, mattresses and area rugs. Participants also enter for a chance to win a $1,000 shopping spree and help AIDS Walk San Diego raise funds to support the work of dozens of HIV/AIDS service and education providers throughout the region. Trolley Dances: The San Diego Dance Theater will team once again with the Metropolitan Transit System to celebrate the 10th Anniversary of Trolley Dances on Saturday, Oct. 4 and Sunday, Oct. 5. Patrons ride the trolley to various locations where dance performances are staged (not on the trolley) to delight and engage them. The annual site-specific dance project will kickoff at Hazard Center and offer a tour on the Green Line with scenic views and provocative performances alongside the San Diego River. After a switch to the Blue Line in Old Town, innovative performances will continue to Downtown San Diego’s Santa Fe Depot. Tickets are $30 for general admission, $20 for seniors and $10 for students. Urban Mo’s Summer Classic Party: With Labor Day behind us and the fall and winter seasons ahead, those who brought you events such as the Twinkie Party, Detour and Noches Calientes have decided that even though summer has come to a close, that’s no reason the party can’t go on. Urban Mo’s Bar and Grille will host its first-ever Summer Classic Party. With an official run time from 4 p.m. to closing, the night promises to bring back the favorite summer hits spanning the ’70s, ’80s, ’90s, and today. Three DJs will be featured, with a $5 cover, however those opting to attend in their most fabulous ’70s attire will not be charged. So bust out your favorite plaid polyester leisure suit, puff out your ’fro, and be sure to apply an extra layer of blue eye shadow, because this must-attend event is one that will not be soon forgotten. Rock-Step: Lee from Kicker’s will teach a combination of two-step, waltz, shadow and shuffle for everyone regardless of skill level. No partner necessary, just bring your sweet self, a willingness to learn and have fun in a community of dancers embracing the values of inclusiveness, respect and good ol’ country kindness and hospitality! The Intro to Two-Step class is from 6:30-7 p.m., Intermediate Spins & Turns from 7-8 p.m., and East Coast Swing from 8-8:30 p.m. This is the only class offered in October and regular Monday classes resume with gusto after the election in November. In the meantime, keep on tappin’ those toes! Wear comfortable clothes and shoes with leather or leather-like soles. The classes take place in The Center’s auditorium. Coffee and Conversation with Cool Women: The Women’s Resource Center (WRC) will resume hosting its popular series, Coffee & Conversation with Cool Women. The event is an intimate talk show of sorts, where hostess Tryce Czycyznska interviews notable women from the San Diego women’s community. The October “cool women” will be Wendy Ochoa and Talonya Geary, creators of FlawLes magazine and Web site. You can join them for coffee, dessert and a dynamic conversation about the community’s newest lesbian publication. HRC San Diego Monthly Social: San Diego’s emerging Human Rights Campaign (HRC) community will hold its monthly called HRC Connect at Hawthorn’s Restaurant Lounge, from 7-9 p.m. The HRC Connect is a great way for the San Diego GLBT community and straight allies to come together in a social environment for a worthy cause: equality. The monthly social allows participants to get to know San Diego’s emerging community and learn more about the HRC, the largest national civil rights organization working for GLBT equality. South Bay Alliance mixer
The South Bay Alliance will hold its monthly mixer at the South Bay Fish & Grill from 5:30-8 p.m. The event is organized to bring together the GLBT community and friends who live in San Diego’s South Bay region. The October mixer will also serve as a fund-raiser for No on 8, which is working to preserve same-sex marriage rights in California.
