For 26 years, Macy’s Passport has showcased fashion, celebrities and theatrics while raising funds for HIV/AIDS organizations in California. This year the magic of Passport will be brought to the silver screen in 29 cities – including in San Diego – as “Fashion Cinema” to raise additional funds for HIV/AIDS organizations and service projects. Founding Chair Elizabeth Taylor, as well as Jennifer Lopez, Will Smith, Cindy Crawford, Mary J. Blige, and others will participate, and fashion labels represented will include Calvin Klein, Alfani, Ben Sherman, Levi’s, 2(X)ist, and others.
The San Diego screening of the event will benefit The San Diego Men’s Chorus’ “Nourishing the Soul” program, which gives main stage concert tickets to clients of local HIV/AIDS service organizations, including Special Delivery.
Macy’s Passport “Fashion Cinema” will take place on Saturday, October 23 at AMC Mission Valley 20.
Included in the ticket price is a 6 p.m. champagne reception at Macy’s Home Store Mission Valley. The cost of admission also includes complimentary theatre concessions and an exclusive Macy’s shopping discount.
According to SDMC Conductor Jerry R. Foust, “Tickets are selling fast. This event will be like no other benefit you’ve attended this year. Macy’s has done a terrific job of creating a multimedia experience you won’t forget. We’re thrilled to be a part of the project, and grateful for the support of Macy’s and presenting sponsor American Express.”

San Diego Row for the Cure to take place Oct. 26
On Oct. 26, the University of California, San Diego rowing team along with Komen San Diego will host its 7th Annual Row for the Cure at North Ski Beach on Mission Bay. The race will begin at 8 a.m.
San Diegans are invited to come down and watch rowers and paddlers of all ages compete on Mission Bay. Rowers, kayakers, and paddlers of all ages and skill levels will participate in timed races and prizes will be awarded to the top finishers in each category. Participants are encouraged to raise pledge money to benefit the Komen Foundation, and all community members are invited to attend the event.
“This is not just an event for rowers,” said UCSD head women’s rowing coach and Row for the Cure coordinator Pattie Pinkerton. “This is a great opportunity for anyone who has ever wanted to try rowing. You can come as an individual, or with friends or a work group and we’ll teach you how to row during the morning, and you can race in our barges. We invite kayakers, dragon boaters, outriggers and those interested in learning to row to register for this year’s Row for the Cure. People will not only get to see some of the top colleges and rowing clubs racing against each other – they’ll be able to actively participate, and support a great cause.”
The Komen Foundation was established when Nancy G. Brinker promised her dying sister, Susan G. Komen, she would do everything in her power to end breast cancer forever. In 1982, that promise became Susan G. Komen for the Cure and launched the global breast cancer movement. The San Diego Affiliate of Komen was established in 1995. Since that time more than $5 million has been given to local San Diego organizations to serve the breast health needs of under-served and uninsured women in San Diego County.
Individuals can register to race in the barge for $25, or groups of up to 10 can register to row together as a “Barge Eight.”

Chorus to compete globally, hold free concert locally
The multiple medal-winning San Diego Chorus of Sweet Adelines International is just weeks away from the excitement, glamour and challenge of another global contest. The chorus is one of 33 of the more than 500 Sweet Adelines choruses worldwide to qualify for the organization’s International competition to be held this year in Honolulu, Hawaii, from Nov. 5 through Nov. 8.
In its 58-year history, the San Diego Chorus has been marked by more awards, medals and prizes than any local sports team.
Under Kim Hulbert’s 23 years of leadership as musical director, the chorus has won seven Regional Championship titles, as well as Gold, Bronze and two Silver International medals. A well-known and highly respected vocal teacher, Hulbert is a coach and mentor to men’s and women’s barbershop quartets and choruses around the world. A member of Sweet Adelines International Faculty and three-time International quartet champion “Queen of Harmony,” she is a certified judge in the category of sound, but this year she’s not judging - she’ll be enjoying the excitement onstage with the chorus, and also with her current competing quartet, “Affinity.”
The women’s a cappella chorus sings four-part harmony (barbershop style), and is dedicated to local entertainment and worldwide competition. Preparation for its trip to Hawaii includes even more involvement and action for current members – especially the management team and musical leadership – from fund-raising, to costume production, to dance rehearsals, to building on the musical excellence and high energy for which the chorus is known.
With a membership of 100 highly trained and talented performers, mostly residing in San Diego and North County, the group rehearses Wednesday evenings in Balboa Park, welcoming auditions year-round.
In their glittery new costumes, the chorus will host a free performance of its two International competition show packages, a thrilling medley of song and dance, on Wednesday, Oct. 29, at 7:30 p.m., in Room 101 of the Casa del Prado Building in Balboa Park.
Celebrate Sexuality workshop for men to be held Nov. 8
The Celebrate Sexuality workshop will be held at The San Diego LGBT Community Center on Saturday, Nov. 8, at 1 p.m.
Facilitated by licensed psychotherapist Michael Kimmel, this workshop will explore the relationship between mental, physical and sexual health.
A happy and healthy sex life is a major part of mental and physical health and a well-balanced sexual life includes the head and heart. Those who are willing to see their sexual expression as a positive and essential part of who they are have the capacity to be mentally and physically healthier than ever before. Instead of focusing on what’s wrong with our sexual lives, the Celebrate Sexuality workshop will explore the ways that sexual expression can encourage emotional, spiritual and physical healing.
Kimmel is an openly-gay San Diego psychotherapist with a private practice in the Kensington area. Kimmel has attended 15 California Men’s Gatherings and facilitated workshops at gatherings in Los Angeles and San Diego and community gatherings at the 2001 and 2002 Julian gatherings. He is currently writing a book, Life Beyond Therapy: How to create a practical, spiritual and psychologically rewarding life.
