AIDS Project launches web site devoted to mental health and HIV risk
AIDS Project Los Angeles (APLA) has taken HIV prevention to the Internet with “Head Project,” a new social marketing campaign addressing HIV prevention and mental health among gay men via a unique web site.
Studies indicate that depression, addiction, anxiety, isolation, childhood abuse and stigma can often challenge gay men’s intentions to practice risk-reducing behaviors. Through in-depth interviews and focus groups with men in West Hollywood, developers of the project found that many men who experience psychological problems are interested in learning about mental health issues in a more autonomous manner than traditional support groups and programs can provide. Designed and created with social marketing designer Andy Williams, the Head Project web site was developed specifically for West Hollywood, a city with a significant gay male population and a destination for gay non-residents who visit the area’s entertainment and social venues. For more information, please visit www.gaylesbiantimes.com for a link to the Head Project web site.
District attorney and county chairman issue warning to fire victims
San Diego District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis and County Board of Supervisors Chairman Greg Cox are warning residents to be aware of individuals who may try to prey on victims of the recent fires. One of the most common practices following a disaster involves unlicensed contractors looking to help fire victims rebuild. All fire victims should be wary of any contractor who initiates contact with them by means of a “cold call.” Residents should contact at least three references, and personally inspect a contractor’s past work. If residents have any questions, they should contact the Better Business Bureau of San Diego, Contractors State License Board or the California Attorney General’s Office Registry of Charitable Trusts. For more information or to report fraud, call the DA’s Economic Crimes Division at (619) 531-4070.
Servicemembers Legal Defense Network benefit
The powerful play Another American: Asking & Telling will have a special benefit performance supporting SLDN at Diversionary Theatre on Wednesday, Nov. 12. Tickets are $35 ($20 for students and military E-l to E-4). The performance depicts experiences regarding the “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy in the military. It is an important play that affects the civil rights of patriotic Americans who can’t openly serve their country simply because they are gay. For additional information, phone (619) 239-4180. SLDN is a national non-profit agency dedicated to ending discrimination and harassment of military personnel affected by “don’t ask, don’t tell.” The benefit will be held at the Diversionary Theatre, 4545 Park Blvd., and will start at 8:00 p.m.

Expert to speak on cybersex addiction
A noted author and specialist in the treatment of sexual addiction will speak in Hillcrest on Saturday, Nov. 22, at 7:00 p.m. on the topic of “cybersex.”
Sexual addiction is a disorder in which there is loss of control over one’s sexual behavior, resulting in physical, emotional, and financial harm to oneself and others. With the growth of the Internet, online pornography and sexual chat-rooms have increasingly become a problem for many people. Sex addicts repeatedly engage in harmful or dangerous behavior despite adverse consequences such as exposure to HIV or other diseases, loss of job, loss of relationship, or arrest.
Patrick Carnes, Ph.D., is a leading advocate of the Twelve Steps for recovery from compulsive sexual behavior. Some of his numerous books include Out of the Shadows, Don’t Call It Love, and In the Shadow of the Net: Breaking Free of Compulsive Online Sexual Behavior. His lecture is the keynote event of a conference scheduled by a local Twelve Step group. Advance registration is requested. The cost is $30, which includes a catered dinner, the lecture and entertainment. For more information, call (858) 735-6647.
