San Diego’s currently active gay sports teams are getting back on the fields and courts this week following the cancellation of play due to the wildfires that blanketed San Diego with smoke and ash just one week ago.

Both the America’s Finest City Softball League and the San Diego County Soccer League were in full swing when winds blew a thick layer of smoke and ash in, causing the cancellation of games not only the day the fires started, but also this past Sunday, Nov. 2. The San Diego Hoops Basketball League cancelled its regularly scheduled Wednesday night games at the Golden Hills Recreation Center due to concerns over poor air quality.

“Bonnie and I just decided to cancel this week’s game because we figure that the gym won’t be available to us,” Hoops Assistant Commissioner David Valenzuela told the Gay and Lesbian Times. “But the main reason is that we just didn’t know how many of the league membership is affected by this tragedy and we figure that family and friends are more important than a couple of games. We can make up games anytime.”

The Hoops basketball league will be back on the courts this week, with the postponed games being moved to the end of the season in February. Softball has rescheduled the cancelled games from Oct. 26 to this coming Sunday, Nov. 9. Field availability is being looked into for games originally scheduled for Nov. 2 and 9. Soccer returns to Robb Field this weekend as well, with the Sparks playing at 9:00 a.m. on Field 6.
