Organizations release lists of Prop. 8 supporters
The Human Rights Campaign Foundation and Californians Against Hate both released lists of businesses, organizations and individuals who supported California’s Proposition 8, the state ban on same-sex marriage approved by 52 percent of voters Nov. 4.
The HRC released its list last week, and called on members of the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community to speak out against the same-sex marriage ban.
“As we look beyond [last] weekend’s protests it’s important that our community and allies are empowered to speak out against those businesses and organizations that supported enshrining discrimination into the California Constitution,” said Human Rights Campaign President Joe Solmonese. “Let us commit that we’ll turn our anger into action by holding accountable these businesses and organizations that fought against our equality.”
The HRC Workplace Project reviewed donations to the major ballot committees – including ProtectMarriage.com and the National Organization for Marriage – that supported the passage of Proposition 8.
The data, available from the California Secretary of State’s Office, was searched for donations derived directly from businesses and organizations, rather than from individuals or national advocacy groups. This list does not include CEOs or senior executives of companies who may have contributed. Due to some complexities in how the donations were tracked, there may be more companies that are not on the list. Also, the amounts should be considered approximate.
Several Fortune 500 companies and organizations contributed to the No on 8 Campaign. However, no Fortune 500 company was found to have contributed to the Yes on 8 Campaign.
There were at least 306 donations from incorporated entities totaling nearly $3 million. The list includes at least 270 organizations from California with most of the others coming from states in the southwest. Californians Against Hate, a nonprofit organization that launched this year to organize community boycotts and create awareness of Proposition 8 supporters, also compiled a list of donors to the same-sex marriage ban.
The organization deemed its list the “Dishonor Roll” and lists contributors who gave $5,000 or more to Proposition 8. It includes information from the California Secretary of State’s Office, and contact information for a number of donors listed, as well as information regarding who the donors are.

Gloria and DeMaio named honorary co-chairs of Archives’ Gala
The Lambda Archives of San Diego announced last week District 5 Councilmember-elect Carl DeMaio and District 3 Councilmember-elect Todd Gloria will be honorary co-chairs of its 21st Annual Gala, Dec. 13.
“The Lambda Archives Gala committee is very honored to have Carl DeMaio, the first openly gay man elected to the San Diego City Council and Todd Gloria, the first elected Filipino-American and the first openly gay man elected to represent District 3, agree to be honorary chairpersons for this year’s event,” said event co-chairs Nicole Murray-Ramirez and Lisa Sanders in a joint statement. “Both men have graciously offered to emcee the event and will each be presenting the archives with memorabilia from their campaigns. San Diego is one of the only major cities in the United States that has two openly gay people serving on the City Council – and that is a historic event in and of itself.”
DeMaio was elected in the June primary and Gloria won in the Nov. 4 run-off.
The 21st Lambda Archives Gala will include entertainment, hors d’oeuvres and a silent auction. Doors open at 5 p.m. The program begins at 6 p.m. and runs until 8 p.m. General tickets are $50 and VIP tickets are $80. Major sponsorships are still available. Volunteers, donations needed for Scott Carlson Thanksgiving Dinner
The Imperial Court de San Diego and the First Unitarian Universalist Church are seeking donations and volunteers for the 20th anniversary Scott Carlson Thanksgiving Dinner.
The dinner, hosted for members of the HIV/AIDS community and their family and friends, will take place Thursday, Nov. 27 at 11:15 a.m., with Thanksgiving dinner served at noon. The First Unitarian Universalist Church will host the dinner in the church’s Bard Hall.
The Thanksgiving Community Dinner was started by Carlson, an HIV/AIDS activist, in 1988 as a holiday event for people living with AIDS. Carlson wanted AIDS patients to have a sense of community on Thanksgiving, and grew the dinner each year until he died. The event’s co-founders renamed the dinner the Scott Carlson Thanksgiving Dinner.
One of the co-founders of the dinner, Dak Thomson-Bousquet, returned this year to help organize the event. For more information on volunteer and donation opportunities, please visit www.gaylesbiantimes.com/links/1091.

Home Renovation Project offers assistance to low-income homeowners
The deadline for applications for the 2009 Home Renovation Program has been extended to Dec. 10. The program accepts applications from low-income families who own their own homes and need assistance with home repair.
The program, a project of Rebuilding Together San Diego, a nonprofit and affiliate of the largest national volunteer home rehabilitation and affordable housing preservationist organization in America, has completed more than 350 projects in 14 years to the tune of $8 million in market value to San Diego County.
This nonprofit organization aids the elderly, and disabled and low-income families throughout San Diego who own and live in their own home, but because of age, physical limitation and low and/or fixed incomes, are not able to address their housing repairs themselves.
Community nonprofit facilities struggling between program costs and deferred maintenance are also welcome to apply.
All work is performed at no cost to the recipients accepted into the program.
Volunteers team together with sponsors, who join forces to renovate homes in communities in and around San Diego, and perform such tasks as interior and exterior painting, general clean-up, landscaping, plumbing, carpentry and electrical repairs that benefit qualified recipients.
