Joyful Holiday
Debby Holiday - Back at No. 1
Published Thursday, 27-Nov-2008 in issue 1092
Debby Holiday broke into the dance scene five years ago with 2004’s celebrated summer anthem “Dive.” More dance floor hits quickly followed including the power ballad “Half A Mile Away,” “Bring It On” and last summer’s “Surrender Me.” Her latest track, “Joyful Sound,” is featured in this season’s hit Logo show “Sordid Lives: The Series” – and just hit No. 1 on the leading dance music site, Masterbeat.com.
The soultry diva took time out of her busy schedule to sit down and chat with the Gay & Lesbian Times about style, soul and being her own woman.
Gay & Lesbian Times: Do you get mistaken for the other Holiday?
Debby Holiday: You mean Jennifer? Not very often. Although with a voice like hers, I certainly wouldn’t mind if I did.
GLT: Your Dad was another famous Holiday.
DH: My dad, Jimmy Holiday, wrote so many amazing songs. The most famous, “Put A Little Love in Your Heart” is still heard in a popular butter commercial.
GLT: Did he influence your career?
DH: I got my “I don’t give a damn” attitude from him. He also taught me to never give up. He was tough. When I was young, he would pull me over to the piano and correct my vocal notes until I got them right.
GLT: So were you more of a daddy’s girl?
DH: I didn’t really grow up in much of a traditional household. I was on my own from a very young age. So, I’m gonna have to say, I am my own girl.
GLT: Debby Holiday is known for her summer anthems. Why did you decide to release Joyful Sound now?
DH: The timing was strictly based around the launch of the Del Shores series, “Sordid Lives.” “Joyful Sound” will be heard in the season finale.
GLT: Your first song, “Dive,” was featured on “Queer As Folk.” We’re noticing a trend here…
DH: Today, television plays a huge part in getting your music heard. I have a long list of people to thank for getting my music out there, from Del Shores to Andrew Briskin, and of course the DJ/Producers like Scotty K and Chris Cox. I am truly grateful to everyone who has helped me.
GLT: Of all your hits, which is your favorite and why?
DH: Easy: “Dive.” It’s where it all started.
GLT: Speaking of trends, you always look so fabulous. Who are your favorite designers?
DH: Christian Satrustegui of Rebellion Dogs blows me away. He has designed several pieces for me and has never failed to shine.
GLT: Besides music, what sound brings you the most joy?
DH: Silence can be utterly beautiful.
GLT: Where can we find you at 9 p.m. on a typical Tuesday night?
DH: In my studio working on music, or at the gym, or these days, parked in front of CNN with a glass of wine.
