Balboa Park December Nights 2008: San Diego’s favorite kick-off to the holiday season, will take place for the 31st consecutive year on Friday, Dec. 5, from 5-10 p.m. and Saturday, Dec. 6, noon to 10 p.m. In the spirit of the holidays, participating Balboa Park museums open their doors free of charge from 5-9 p.m. both evenings. WomanSong: The San Diego Women’s Chorus presents its 21st annual holiday concert, “WomanSong.” This wide-ranging show of songs written by women composers from various time periods will take place at the Mission Hills United Church of Christ, at 7:30 p.m. SDWC will perform songs both classical and contemporary, while singing in English, German, and Latin. “WomanSong” will be a program featuring joyful and powerful compositions of music written by women, particularly from time periods when women composers were rare and less celebrated. Tickets are $15 for general admission, $12 for seniors, students, military, and groups of 10 or more. Children under age 12 are admitted for free. Come Home for The Holidays!: Celebrating Hanukkah, Winter Solstice, Christmas, Kwanzaa and the upcoming New Year, The San Diego LGBT Community Center will host the seventh annual Come Home for the Holidays! party from 5-8 p.m.
The event brings the community together to celebrate the past year and look toward 2009. Food and entertainment will be provided. There will be a no-host bar, music and a candle lighting ceremony. The event is co-hosted by a number of community agencies, including APICAP, Ebony Pride, Bienestar, the Imperial Court de San Diego and The Center, along with many others. The event is free, however, guests are asked to bring a new, unwrapped toy for the Imperial Court de San Diego’s annual toy drive. The holiday party takes place at The Center. Martinis Above Fourth Wreath Auction: Mark your calendar for The Fifth Annual Martinis Above Fourth Wreath Auction at 7 p.m. Over the past four years Martinis Above Fourth has raised more than $65,000 for The Queen Eddie Youth Fund established by the Imperial Court to care for the educational needs of our young community members. At this event, more than 40 uniquely designed holiday wreaths are auctioned off, which were all created and donated by various community members, organizations and businesses. Hula’s Holiday Gift Card Drive: Join The San Diego LGBT Community Center, MARYAH and Gentleman’s Martini Night for a fabulous night at Hula’s Beach Bar and Grill. Hula’s will be a hosting a “Holiday Gift Card Drive” to benefit The Youth Housing Project from 6-9 p.m. Everyone who attends is asked to bring a gift card for Vons, Ralphs, Target or other major stores so formerly homeless GLBTQ youth can purchase essential items like food, clothing, toiletries and school supplies. Day Without a Gay Party: Gays, lesbians, and straight allies plan to call in to work “gay” to protest passage of anti-gay constitutional amendments in Arizona, Florida and California. On this historic day, to show their support to those who will be enjoying a day off, both Urban Mo’s and Baja Betty’s will be hosting happy hour from open to close. DJ Taj will be spinning at Mo’s from 1-8 p.m., at which time he will turn the stage over to the performers of Dreamgirls for their anniversary show. There will be no cost to attend any of these events.
Rethinking Gender: The Women’s Resource Center (WRC) at The San Diego LGBT Community Center will present “Rethinking Gender: A Four-Part Series” at 7 p.m. Facilitator Erin Burgoon will lead this dynamic and discussion-based workshop series, encouraging participants to challenge common notions about gender and to explore the many issues surrounding gender on a personal, community and cultural level. In this, the fourth session, participants will discuss gender oppression, privilege and strategies for liberation and conclude the workshop series with a discussion of the privileges and struggles that are directly related to gender; then celebrate creative expression and gender freedom with a live performance by the SD Kings Club, San Diego’s premier drag king troupe!
