‘The Sound of Music’ musical sing-a-long: If you’re the kind of person who loves to sing along to your favorite musicals, bring the entire family and plan to join your fellow enthusiasts enjoy The Sound of Music at the Musical Sing-Along Movie Series, presented by the Birch North Park Theatre and Hawthorn’s Restaurant. Audience participation is encouraged and a good time is guaranteed as Maria, a postulant in an abbey in Austria, is told by Mother Superior that she doesn’t have the decorum to become a full-time nun. Sing-a-long as she’s sent to do the work of God with the Von Trapp family! The Sound of Music musical sing-a-long will start at 7:30 p.m. on Friday and again on Sunday, Jan.11, at 2:30 p.m. Enjoy a half-price drink with ticket stub at Hawthorn’s, before or after the show. Soy Boys: Soy Boys is a new social group for gay and gay-friendly guys who are vegetarian or interested in a vegetarian lifestyle. The group meets at least once a month for potlucks, outings to vegetarian friendly restaurants and other social events. Red Hot Disco!: Break out your best polyester and get ready to do the hustle! The Women’s Resource Center (WRC) will present Red Hot Disco, a women’s nightclub at The San Diego LGBT Community Center from 6-9 p.m. Sandra Ware will be in the house, spinning the Bee Gees, the Jackson 5 and your favorite hits from yesterday and today. Enjoy dancing, door prizes, snacks and a no-host bar for $5 per person. Attendees are encouraged to wear ’70s inspired attire (think Saturday Night Fever, platform shoes and bellbottoms), to participate in the “Dynamite Costume Contest.” Women 21 and up are welcome. Smothers Brothers: The irrepressible Smothers Brothers have made a sweeping impact on generations of fans with their singular blend of comedic and musical talents. As they mark 50 years in show business, the Smothers Brothers are being saluted as time-honored legends. Rock-Step: Lee from Kicker’s will teach a combination of two-step, waltz, shadow, and shuffle for everyone regardless of skill level. No partner necessary, just bring your sweet self, a willingness to learn and have fun in a community of dancers embracing the values of inclusiveness, respect, and good ol’ country kindness and hospitality! The Intro to Two-Step class is from 6:30-7 p.m., Intermediate Spins & Turns from 7-8 p.m., and East Coast Swing from 8-8:30 p.m. Wear comfortable clothes and leather or leather-like soles. Gentleman’s Martini Night: San Diego’s weekly gathering for gay professionals and friends takes place at a different location each week. There are no membership fees, cover charges or hidden agendas. There is a mandatory dress code: dressy casual or business attire. No tank tops, cut-off sleeve shirts, T-shirts, blue jeans, distressed pants, shorts, open-toed shoes, tennis shoes or club-wear. The event takes place each week from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at some of the best known hotels and resorts in San Diego, Coronado and La Jolla. Hillcrest Town Council meeting: Join other concerned residents from Hillcrest and surrounding neighborhoods as they gather to provide a voice and enhance the quality of life for everyone in Hillcrest while supporting actions that benefit the neighborhood. Topics range from same-sex marriage presentations and conversations with political representatives, to town hall debates. POZabilities Movie Night & Potluck: Join SD POZabilities as the group kicks off 2009’s Movie & Potluck night with a pot of “Jerry’s Soon To Be Famous Turkey Chili.” The featured movie will be Waiting for Guffman, a comedic “mockumentary” directed by Christopher Guest. The movie is a loving parody of community theater set in the small town of Blaine, Mo. It chronicles the trials and tribulations of a handful of utterly delusional residents as they prepare to put on a community theater production chronicling the town’s history. The SD POZabilities Movie Night & Potluck is free, but attendees are asked to bring a dish to share with serving utensils. Also keep in mind cooking is unable to be done at the event. Bitchin’ Kitchen Cooking Series: Join the Women’s Resource Center for its new Cooking Series and get busy in the kitchen. For $10 per session, participants get to cook, eat and take home the recipes of the month, all while scooping up fun with other ladies in the community. The menu for January includes broiled mushroom caps stuffed with asparagus and parmesan cheese, turkey avocado Melt on grilled sourdough, molten lava cupcakes with strawberry puree’, and chocolate-dipped strawberries. The Bitchin’ Kitchen Cooking Series will be held at the San Diego LGBT Community Center, located at 3909 Centre St. in Hillcrest.
