Volunteers needed for marriage equality rally
Volunteers are needed for the Repeal DOMA Rally, Saturday Jan. 10. The 10 a.m. pre-rally will precede a march scheduled to step off from the County Administration Building at 11 a.m.
The march will wind through Downtown San Diego, and end at the County Administration Building for a post-march rally at 1 p.m.
Volunteers are needed for the truck crew, site set up crew and clean up crew. Crowd control and peace security monitors are also needed, as are petition gatherers.
The federal Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) does not require states to recognize same-sex marriages recognized in other states, and does not allow the federal government to recognize same-sex marriages.
The San Diego Equality Campaign and the San Diego Alliance for Marriage Equality have teamed with Join the Impact to host the local march and rally. On Jan. 10, people will march nationwide to call for the repeal of DOMA.
Organizers are asking participants to stay positive and peaceful.

San Diego Pride announces board appointment
San Diego LGBT Pride has announced the election of Carl L. Worrell to its board of directors.
Worrell is the corporate controller for Retail Pro Inc., and earned his degree in business administration at Western Illinois University. He has more than 25 years of finance and accounting experience including several years in senior management for other nonprofit organizations.
“In addition to Carl’s enthusiasm and desire to get involved, we are pleased to add his finance and accounting talents to the board’s knowledge base,” said Pride Board Chair Philip Princetta.
The board is the governing body that oversees San Diego Pride as a nonprofit organization, while the Pride production committee is tasked with organizing the San Diego Pride community-enhancement activities, which include the annual parade and festival.
The board is seeking diversity and gender parity as it continues recruiting new board members with backgrounds or skills in legal affairs, public relations, development or banking fields.
The San Diego Pride celebration is the city’s largest civic and cultural event that brings together gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people, as well as their supporters. The year’s Pride weekend is scheduled for July 18-19. The festivities include a mile-long parade down University Avenue in Hillcrest at 11 a.m., July 18, and a two-day festival on July 18-19, featuring multiple performance stages, local community organizations, arts and crafts, employee groups, and food and beverage gardens.

Women’s Chorus invites singers, volunteers to join
The San Diego Women’s Chorus is preparing for its next season of song and is inviting all interested singers and non-singing volunteers to join them.
SDWC’s spring concert will be on June 6 and 7 and is set to the theme of making a difference in our world on personal, political, and environmental levels.
Selections for the concert will include the Oscar Award-winning “I Need to Wake Up” by Melissa Etheridge, “Imagine” by John Lennon, “Big Yellow Taxi” by Joni Mitchell, “Mercy Mercy Me” by Marvin Gaye, and “The Song of Purple Summer” from the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical Spring Awakening.
The Chorus will also perform “One Drop” – which was commissioned by the Newfoundland Symphony Youth Choir and is about the importance of water – and “This We Know” featuring the words of Chief Seattle.
Rehearsals for SDWC’s spring season begin on Sunday, Jan. 18, at 4 p.m. at the University Christian Church located at 3900 Cleveland Ave., across from the Hillcrest Post Office and DMV. The Women’s Chorus welcomes all new and returning members to join as it kicks off its exciting spring season.
SDWC is a non-audition community chorus that invites women of all ages, ethnicities and skill levels to come sing with it. Reading music is a plus but not a requirement. All the chorus asks is that participants have a love of music, be able to match pitch with a piano, and have a commitment to participate.
Non-singers are also welcome and are invited to join the volunteer member auxiliary, the Accents. For more information about the San Diego Women’s Chorus, call 619-291-3366, e-mail info@sdwc.org, or visit www.sdwc.org.
San Diego LGBT Pride Launches T-shirt Design Contest
Graphic artists and those with creative imaginations are invited to submit logo designs for the annual T-shirt contest being held by San Diego Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender Pride. Designs must incorporate the Pride logo available on www.sandiegopride.org under “T-shirt contest,” as well as the theme and dates of this year’s Pride weekend: “Stonewall 2.0: Activism for Equality” – July 18-19.
The winning designer will receive $250, a T-shirt and two multi-day tickets to the Pride Festival in Balboa Park.
There are no color or style demands, however, Pride Executive Director Ron deHarte hopes designers are inspired by the protest graphics of the 1970s and today’s high-tech grassroots activism. Entries must be received by Friday, Jan. 23, as either a jpeg image (1050 x 1050 pixels, 150 resolution) or mounted on a 15-by-10-inch black board with the image measuring seven-by-seven inches.
In addition to appearing on festival and parade T-shirts, the chosen artwork may also be used in full color and black and white in a variety of marketing materials, Pride merchandise and other clothing items.
Send submissions to info@sdpride.org or P.O. Box 34366, San Diego, CA 92163. All entries will become the property of San Diego LGBT Pride and will not be returned. For more information, call the Pride office at 619-297-7683.
Sing for health in 2009 and beyond
The recipe for a long happy life usually includes eating right, exercise and regular medical care...but many people also add something else to the mix: Singing. Yes, singing. Recently on National Public Radio, Brian Eno, a founding member of the rock band Roxy Music, presented an essay on how singing is the key to a long life, giving singers both physiological and social benefits, especially when enjoyed with others. Singers often form a community that bolsters them, emotionally and physically.
San Diego’s multiple medal-winning San Diego Chorus of Sweet Adelines International, currently ranked 7th in the world, is such a group, experiencing and believing whole-heartedly in the joys and benefits of singing together. The women’s a cappella chorus sings four-part harmony (barbershop style), and is dedicated to local entertainment and worldwide competition. With a membership of 100 highly trained and talented performers, the group rehearses Wednesday evenings in Balboa Park, welcoming guests and auditions year-round. The chorus comprises women of all ages, social backgrounds, professions and experience – combining into a unique unit with a strong tie to the community, and each other. Members join to interact with audiences, get exercise, access stress-relief, benefit from musical education and enjoy the competitiveness of this active group, which extends out to the more than 500 Sweet Adelines choruses worldwide – all sharing the love and benefits of singing.
